John Soper, aged 87 years, passed away at his residence in Burke Street on Tuesday evening. A native of Devonshire, England, the deceased emigrated to Australia in 1880, and began work on Seaforth Plantation. After various bricklaying jobs, he settled on a farming property at McDesme, where he later began cane farming, as a result of the encouragement of the late John Drysdale. He leaves in addition to his widow, a family of five daughters, Mrs. A. Rutherford, Mrs. C. Harris, Mrs. S. Page, Mrs. J. Giddy, and Mrs. G. Giddy, and six sons, John, William, Henry, Herbert, Arthur and Walter. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. K. Stevens, of the Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday afternoon.
