HILLCOAT.-On February 17, at " Ormah," Sydney, John William Hillcoat, second son of the late Rev. H. Brougham W. Hillcoat, D.D., incumbent of St. Matthew's, Scotland- road, Liverpool, and chaplain to the Duke at Sussex, aged 78 years.

Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette 21 Feb 1907
Mr. John William Hillcoat who was associated with Gympie mining in the very
early days. He arrived on the field during the latter part of 1868, and after
following mining for some time he undertook the management of Threlkeld's
crushing mill which was erected on
Pumpkin Flat. This was eventually removed to Black Snake, and Mr. Hillcoat,
retaining the managership, moved to
that mining centre. After some years
he relinquished mining pursuits to take
up a selection at Wolvi, but about 22
years ago he left the district and made
Sydney his home. He had attained the
ripe, age of 76 years. He appears to
have enjoyed good health up to about
three weeks ago, when he visited Katoomba and whilst there was seized with
an illness which terminated fatally. His
son Mr. Reginald Hillcoat grazier of the Gulf, North Queensland, and his daughter Mrs. Ross were with him at the
last. The deceased gentleman leaves five sons and three daughters, the members of the famiiy in this district being
Messrs. Henry and John Hillcoat.

NOTICE is hereby given that by an Indenture of Release and Assignment, bearing date the eighteenth day of April, in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty four, and made between JOHN WILLIAM HILLCOAT, of West Maitland, in the colony of New South Wales, of the first part, and JAMES WOLSTENHOLME, of the same place, storekeeper, a trustee for the purposes herein- after mentioned, of the second part, and the several creditors of the said John William Hillcoat of the third part, for the considerations therein mentioned, the said John William Hillcoat did convey, grant and assign, and set over unto the said Trustee, all his real and personal estate and effects whatsoever, upon trust, for the benefit of all his creditors, as therein mentioned. And further, that the said indenture was duly executed by the said John William Hillcoat and the said Trustee, and duly attested ac- cording to the provisions of the Act of the Governor and Council of New South Wales in that behalf made and provided. And the said indenture is now lying at the office of WILLIAM HENRY MULLEN, High street, West Maitland, aforesaid, for Inspection and execution by the creditors of the said John William Hillcoat

On Friday evening a public meeting of persons favourable to the formation of a building society in the town of West Maitland was held in Mr. Hillcoat's room, High street. The attendance was not numerous, but influential. Mr. George Vindin was voted to the chair.

Gympie Agricultural,Mining and Pastoral Society - Mr. Hillcoat exhibited some very good Herefords, among them Baronet by Sir Patrick out of Sunshine by Young Carlisle, who won the medal in his class ; and Mr. Lord's beautiful heifer Bride made a good fight for the championship . (JW's daughter Catherine married a Lord)

HILLCOAT.-On February 17, at " Ormah," Sydney, John William Hillcoat, second son of the late Rev. H. Brougham W. Hillcoat, D.D., incumbent of St. Matthew's, Scotland- road, Liverpool, and chaplain to the Duke at Sussex, aged 78 years.

Mr. John William Hillcoat who was associated with Gympie mining in the very
early days. He arrived on the field during the latter part of 1868, and after
following mining for some time he undertook the management of Threlkeld's
crushing mill which was erected on
Pumpkin Flat. This was eventually removed to Black Snake, and Mr. Hillcoat,
retaining the managership, moved to
that mining centre. After some years
he relinquished mining pursuits to take
up a selection at Wolvi, but about 22
years ago he left the district and made
Sydney his home. He had attained the
ripe, age of 76 years. He appears to
have enjoyed good health up to about
three weeks ago, when he visited Katoomba and whilst there was seized with
an illness which terminated fatally. His
son Mr. Reginald Hillcoat grazier of the Gulf, North Queensland, and his daughter Mrs. Ross were with him at the
last. The deceased gentleman leaves five sons and three daughters, the members of the family in this district being
Messrs. Henry and John Hillcoat.
