Another life was lost by accident at the A A Company's Borehole pit. A lad about thirteen years of age named John Snadden, the son of a miner, was employed on top of the the pit assisting the man engaged in "banking off". The boy's duty was to run the empty skip on to the cage or place where it rests previous to being let down the pit. Instead of doing this he ran the skip over the pit's mouth where there was nothing to catch it, the skip suddenly going down pulled the boy with it. and he fell from the top to the bottom of the pit. When taken up life was extinct. It is believed the lad must have forgot himself, or been looking round at the moment, and thus run the skip on to the wrong end of the pit. The lad had not been long engaged at the work. An inquest has since been held.

MINMI Mr. John Sneddon, of Cessnock, who succumbed in the Maitland Hospital, on Sunday, to injuries received in the Aber dare Collary, was well known in Minmi where he had lived with his parents; prior to removing with them to Cessnock some time ago. His early demise is much re gretted by his Minmi associates, by whom he was highly respected. Age 24

My GGG?F was John (John Snedden is the 3rd great grandfather of David Ian Sneddon.)b.15/4/1819 Alloa d.18/1/1893 Newcastle NSW married Mary HUNTER in 1852 in Scotland + 9 children. Migrated to Australia arriving Sydney 21 Feb 1855 aboard ANNA, from Liverpool (10 11 1854)
with family. (On the inbound passenger list, Mary is Mary 24, Andrew 12, John 9, Jane - Infant, Andrew & John where from Johns previous marriage to Anne Hunter, maybe his second wife’s sister………..)
By 1856 they were in Newcastle, and in 1865 they were in Minmi, NSW.
A Miner by trade
Buried with wife Mary, at Minmi cemetery.
Appears to have had a total of 10 children, with 2 sets of twins.
