The Age (Melbourne)
MR. JOHN SHIRLOW.
With the death of Mr. John Shirlow,
at his home, Glen Huntly, on Monday
night, Australian art is poorer by the
loss of a distinguished etcher, to whom
the art of his country, in whatever form
manifested, was of deep personal interest.
He was born at Sunbury about seventy
years ago. Though individual local
painters, such as Tom Roberts, may have
produced etchings prior to Shirlow, he
was the first to take the art up de
finitely as a profession and the issue of
a portfolio set in 1904 found him fairly
established in public favor. His early
career was a battle against adverse con
ditions, pecuniary and otherwise, but his
stubborn will triumphed, and his work,
which showed a reminiscent leaning to
street subjects and old colonial build
ings, came to be sought after by private
collectors and public galleries. In his
earlier days he was a prominent figure
on the council of the Victorian Artists'
Society, and in addition to black and
white exhibited occasional works in color
which, though in some respects sound,
did not command the attention of his
achievements with the bitten line. In
1921 he was appointed a trustee of the
Melbourne National Gallery, and wielded
an influence on behalf of Australian art
on the walls of the galleries. His later
election to the Felton Bequest Board,
gave further opportunities in this re
spect. Mr. Shirlow's ability in teaching
was demonstrated as art master at Scotch
College, and more intimately as origin
ator and instructor of a class in etching
at the Technical College. His broad
humanitarianism and his generous love
of Youth and anxiety to help it in a
difficult world was shown markedly in
letters to the editor of "The Age" pub
lished during a long tale of years. John
Shirlow was to the last young in mind
and aspiration. Mr. Shirlow leaves a
widow and four children. The remains
will be cremated at the Spring Vale
Cemetery at 4 p.m. to-day.
