THE LATE MR. H. D. MELVILLE.
Sixty-eight years residence in
Townsvllle, which embraced a period
of 46 years' diligent service with the
Townsvllle Railway Department, was
terminated with the death on Febru-
ary 15th. of Mr. Henry Dean Melville,
at the age of 70 years. Mr. Melville
who was of Scottish parentage, was
born in Prahran, Victoria, on 20th.
October. 1865, and at three years of
age he accompanied his mother to
Townsville. where they took up resid-
ence near Mysterton Estate, his father
having died two years previously.
Shortly after arriving in Townsville
his mother married Mr. W. T. Morris.
In 1884 the late Mr. Melville entered
the employ of the Railway Depart-
ment as fitter's assistant in the work-
shops, and his ability and keenness of
duty gradually earned for him the
position of assistant locomotive fore-
man, a position which he held at his
retirement from the service in 1930..
In 1901 he was apponted leading fitter
in the workshop and his appoint
ment as assistant loco, foreman was
announced In 1925. From an early
age. Mr. Melville displayed a keen in-
terest in the military affairs of the
city, and his service in this capacity
is most interesting, earning for him
on his retirement In 1904. the coveted
long service medal. Sergeant Major
Melville, joined No 4 Battery of the
Queensland Volunteer Artillery in
September. 1883. under Captain A. E.
Douglas, mid his promotion to Bom-
bardier in 18S4 was immediately fol-
lowed by his appointment the follow-
ing year to the rank nf Corporal.
Sergeant in 1891. Quartermaster
sergeant In 1896 ana Brigade Ser-
geant-major In 1901. He was s mem-
ber of the Corps when its name was
changed to the Townsville Volunteer
Artillery in 1884. and was re-sworn in
under the Defence Act of 1885 in
March of that year. During his
military service, he served under the following
commanding officers, Tunbridge Captains Douglas.
Henry. Darvall, Jameson and Thomp-
son. In addition. the deceased was
Captain of the North Queensland
Railway and Civil Service Rifle Club for many
and until the time of his death, he continued to
retain an unofficial interest in military
activities, and his three eldest sons ser-
ved their country during the Great War.
Deceased was also treasurer of the Amalgamated
Engineering Union for 24 years, a Past Grand
Master of the Masonic Lodge. and a member of
the Oddfellows' Lodge for 52 years
During the whole if his residence in
Townsvllle. Mr. Melville was a re-
gular visitor to Magnetic Island,
where for many vears he tutored his
sons in their early life In bushcraft
In 1890 he was married to Miss
Emma Louise Whebell. The deceased
is survived by five sons. Dacre. Wil-
liam (Brisbane). Albert (Cairns),
Fred and Jack. and also by five
daughters Although many were un-
aware of his demise, the funeral was
largely representative of many old
residents of Townsville
