Austine, and Mrs. J. L. Hayward. Aged 65 years. Deeply regretted. Daily Mercury (Mackay) 28 July 1948 OBITUARY. MR. HUGH WALLACE. One of the foundation members of the' Mackay District Cane- growers' Executive, Mr. Hugh Wal lace, Shakespeare-street, passed away at the District Hospital last Saturday afternoon, one week be- before he was due to retire. The late Mr. Wallace was born at Newtonards, in the north of Ireland; 65 years ago, and came to Australia nearly half a century ago to join his brother (Mr. Wil liam John Wallace) who was cane farming at Finch Hatton. For sev eral years he worked in the in dustry and eventually took up land at the foot of Eungella Range where he grew bananas. Several years later he carried on business as a canegrower at Boongana, as a supplier to Cattle Creek mill. A representative of the Cattle Creek mill suppliers, he became a member of the Mackay District Cane growers' Executive when it was formed in 1926 and continued to represent that dis trict until 1927. Owing to ill- health he relinquished the farm about 25 years ago and was ap pointed district salesman to the executive and later became dis trict representative of Massey Harris Ltd. The late Mr. Wallace was a devoted member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church and served for many years on the committee of management and was actively associated with the Armitage Memorial Hall. During his long association with the Mackay and District Cale donian Association he occupied, on one or two occasions, the posi tion of chieftain and took a prom inent part in all Scottish gather ings. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Par- fitt (St. Lawrence), Mrs. J. V. Austine (Mackay), Mrs. J. L. Hay- ward (Mackay) and two sons, Mr. W. J. Wallace (Townsville), and Mr. R. H. Wallace (Mackay). The funeral moved from St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. R. G. Skerman, MA. At the Mackay cemetery a lament was played by two pipers and the burial services, of the Masonic Lodge, the Loyal Orange Lodge, and the Order of Foresters were read at the grave- side. |
