OBITUARY.
LATE MR. JAMES GILL AN. ;
Mr . John Gillan, accountant,
Marsh & Webster/ received the sad
information yesterday morning that
his father had passed away in Bris
bane a short while previously. The
. late Mr. James Gillan was in his 76th
year and had been in failing health
for some time. He was well known
in Mackay, having resided here from
1910 until 1922, and for nine years
was chief engineer on the tender Tay.
Of a retiring disposition, he was
popular and highly respected, and
sincere sympathy is extended to his
widow, family, and relatives in their
bereavement. The late Mr. Gillan was
born in White Inch, near Glasgow
(Scotland), in 1856 and served and
completed his apprenticeship to the
engineering /trade on the Clyde.
Later he took to the sea as engineer,
and through his occupation he visited
most of the important seaports of
the world. In the British-India
Steamship Co.'s boats he visited Aus
tralia on mahy occasions, and about
1888 decided to remain here. He
secured an engagement with the
ASN Co, later the AUSN Co, and
served as engineer and chief en
gineer for a number of years on
different vessels controlled by this
company. He was well and favor
ably known in all Australian ports.
Later he joined the s.s. Palmer, with
Townsville the home port, where he
remained for nearly 20 years, and in
1910 came to Mackay as chief en
gineer of the Tay, owned by the
A.U.S.N. Co. In 1919 he resigned
the position and went into retire
ment. In 1922, with Mrs.Gillan,
sen., he left to reside in Brisbane,
where he passed away yesterday
morning. Deceased leaves, to mourn

other children also predeceased their
father — Alexander and James
(the youngest), who died from diph-
theria when children, and Effie, who
died in Mackay in 1913.
