Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette 21 Feb 1907
Mr. John William Hillcoat who was associated with Gympie mining in the very
early days. He arrived on the field during the latter part of 1868, and after
following mining for some time he undertook the management of Threlkeld's
crushing mill which was erected on
Pumpkin Flat. This was eventually removed to Black Snake, and Mr. Hillcoat,
retaining the managership, moved to
that mining centre. After some years
he relinquished mining pursuits to take
up a selection at Wolvi, but about 22
years ago he left the district and made
Sydney his home. He had attained the
ripe, age of 76 years. He appears to
have enjoyed good health up to about
three weeks ago, when he visited Katoomba and whilst there was seized with
an illness which terminated fatally. His
son Mr. Reginald Hillcoat grazier of the Gulf, North Queensland, and his daughter Mrs. Ross were with him at the
last. The deceased gentleman leaves five sons and three daughters, the members of the famiiy in this district being
Messrs. Henry and John Hillcoat.

An Oven for Heating Brands.
The trouble and annoyance connected with brand-heating is known on every cattle station. We are, therefore, exceedingly pleased to lay before our squatting readers a hint which we think will help them greatly in this difficulty. It has been forwarded to us by Mr. Reginald Hillcoat of Canobie station, Cloncurry River. The rough sketch of the oven by Mr. Hillcoat we have elaborated to fit it for publioation, but trust that in doing so we have not altered his idea. (Couldn't get the sketch across)

Camperdown Chronicle Vic 19 March 1889
Cattle Branding.
In a letter to the Queenslander, Mr. Reginald Hillcoat,of Canobie Station, Cloncurry River, gives the following description of an oven for heating cattle brands, which will be found worthy the consideration of the pro prietors of large herds of cattle. Mr. Hillcoat says:—"We have been using a contrivance here for the last 18 months for heating brands which I am certain if it were more generally known would be universally used. It is a roughly-made oven, and any handy man can run it up in a couple of days. The saving of firewood is very consider able, to say nothing of the blasphemy expended on the brands and the fire man attending to them. A boy can look after the fire, and the brands are kept in a uniform heat, while the handles are cool, being outside of the oven and clear of the fire all the time. We. have branded over 6,000 calves, and have only used a waggon load of firewood doing it. The oven is built of rough flat stones, the mortar used being ant-bcd, with chopped grass. The walls are built in a circle about 15in. thick, the inside dia meter being about 2ft, a uniform width being carried up say 4ft, then the top is gradually brought in to a dome; the chimney is finished by an oil-can with the ends knocked out. In the inside of the oven are four bars of iron (old wheel tires will do) placed across and let into the walls a foot from the ground, on which the fire is placed. Above the bars and just below the centre opening (say, 2ft 6in from ground) is another bar for the brand to rest on. The brands are put through the centre opening, and are thus directly over the flame and get red hot in a very short time. Two smaller openings are left at the base of oven for vent, being directly opposite one another, and either of them can be used for raking out the ashes from time to time. The oven can be placed close to the rails of the branding pen, so that the brander can reach the brands himself and replace them on the fire when he is done with them.

THROUGH THE NORTH WEST - CLONCURRY TO NORMANTON
Leaving Granada the following morning we reach Donaldson for luncheon. There is a post and telegraph office and hotel here. We are now seventy miles from Cloncurry, and, during the afternoon we make for "Boomarra' station twenty miles, or more, farther on. The shades of night were falling as we pulled up at the hospitable abode of Mr. Reginald Hillcoat, the owner of Boomarra. Boomarra contains 400 square miles of open downs interposed with gravelly and sandy ridges. The station carries about 6000 head of Shorthorn cattle. Mr. Hillcoat has been in the Gulf country since 1881- For ten years he was manager of Canobie, an adjoining station. He acquired the country comprising Boomarra ten years ago, and founded the station. The property is watered by dams and creeks; but these fail in dry seasons. The main consideration, Mr. Hillcoat explains, is the conservation of water. The grass has never given out;, and its value as permanent pasture was made fully manifest during the drought period of 1902, when large numbers of sheep from elsewhere were maintained in the locality.
