Note 10: Burial record Bowen Independent 9 May 1934 THE LATE ROBERT WILLIAM DRINKWATER. AN OLD PIONEER. The death of Robert William Drinkwater recently at the age of 83 years severed a connecting link with the early history of this district (says “Proserpine Guardian”). The late Mr. Drlnkwater was born at Cley, Norfolk, England on the 30th November, 1850. When he was 17 years of age he fancied a life at sea and went to sea, following that life, for 14 years. In those days the ships were practically all sailing vessels, and he was the bosun hand pn four different sailing ships, the discharges from which he treasured and kept the whole of his life., While engaged in this life he practically travelled the whole world, and helped in the repair of the Atlantic cable , when at sea. He joined an immigrant ship, the Al bany, a steam boat, and sailed for Aus tralia in 1881, there being 300 immi grants on the boat, including Mr. D. R. Thomas, of Lethebrook. He land ed at Cooktown, and there he joined a circus and remained with it for some time, he taking his part as the “clown” at times. He left the circus at Mackay and went to Bowen, where he opened a business barbering, oys ter saloon tobacconist and fruit. While in Bowen he always had his sport duck shooting, and he was a not ed champion with the gun. After a few years he left the business and then went to Croydon, gold mining for about two years. Then he went mar supial shooting with Mr. J. Edgerton, one of the old Bowenites. Mr. Drink water then came, to Kelsey Creek and selected a piece of land ,aud still followed marsupial. shooting until he had the misfortune to lose an eye, which compelled him to give up that vocation. Farming then engaged his attention and he grew tobacco for his first crop, afterwards growing cotton, and then went into the cane industry, which he carried on until failing health prevented him from following the heavy work attached to it. The late Mr. Drlnkwater was mar ried in 1885 in Bowen to Mary Meiz ner, a member of an old Bowen fam ily. He lived for 38 years at Kelsey Creek and well remembered the time when Mr. August Schumaker kept the first hotel in Proserpine. He was one of the oldest pioneers in the district. He left a wife, and a family of seven daughters and three sons to mourn their sad loss. The daughters are Mrs. A. Chauntler, Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Harry Stafford. Mrs. Walter Simpson, Mrs, Joe Rogers, Mrs. ,T. Morris and Miss J. Drlnkwater. The sons are Messrs. Charlie, Dick and Fred Drlnkwater.
