ANDREW & MARGARET FIFE PATTERSON
And ROBERT & SOPHIA PATTERSON In the beautiful town of Newton , Scotland , the families of Robert and Mary Drysdale lived with many of their relatives. Robert and Mary lived in Newton at the time Andrew was born 25 October 1815. He was the father of our grandfather Robert. He married Margaret Fife, daughter of John Fife and Margaret Hunter, of Sterling , near Newton . Grandfather Andrew Patterson was the eldest of a family of four children. His sister Janet, 3 years younger, married Andrew Fife. Robert next married Agnes Sharp and Alexander married Mary Fife. Andrew and Margaret had four children born in Scotland . Margaret, the eldest, was born in 1838 and Robert in 1840. Agnes and Mary Roy were born in 1844. Andrew and Margaret embraced the gospel in Scotland and sailed for America , coming to St. Louis, Missouri , where mother Margaret died 5 August 1848. Robert would have been 8 years old in November at the time of his mother’s death. Grandfather Andrew married Jean Nelsen Morgan before leaving St. Louis. The family then came to Utah in 1852. Later they moved to Cedar City where they lived for several years. On 7 February 1856, the family moved to Parowan and from there came to Beaver with the first Pioneers. Andrew’s eldest daughter, Margaret, married John X. Smith in Cedar City . They too later moved to Beaver. Agnes Ann married Philo Farnsworth and Mary married Samuel Moffat. The family of our Grandmother Jean and Andrew were: Edward, Catherine, Sly, Jack, Thomas and Martha (Aunt Matt), mother of Myrtle Waters. The John X . Smith family was a large group. Aunt Nell Smith Willden being the last to have passed on. The Farnsworth family later moved from Beaver. Lou Farnsworth was the father of Philo Farnsworth, discoverer of Television and several broadcasting devices. The Bradshaw family, George Lafy and others are grandchildren of Aunt Mary Patterson Moffat. The Moffat family moved to Idaho young. Some of the boys are still living. Grandfather Robert Patterson was 16 when the family moved to Beaver. Andrew and his sons were great men for the mountains and expert axe-men and lumber-men. They brought much timber to build their homes and farm buildings. They made many roads into Patterson Canyon . Bob’s Springs was named for them. Andrew was a farmer and stockman as well. He died 1 July 1879 here in Beaver at the age of 64 years old. We haven’t a picture of him but Aunt Matt said Jack Patterson, father of Verla, looked more like her father than anyone else in the Patterson family. We do not know anything of the early life of Andrew or wife Margaret Fife. Margaret died at the age of 33 years old. She was buried in St. Louis, Missouri . She is believed to have died of Cholera. Grandpa told me that Cholera struck many people and the dead were many. He said his father went in among the sick ones and helped whenever he could. He never got the Cholera which was very fortunate. Adolph Joseph Bohn was sent to Cedar City to work in the Iron Mines. He moved his family to Beaver while Grandma Sophia was a young girl. Grandmother and Grandfather fell in love and were married on Grandfather’s 25th birthday, 25 November 1865. They were married in Beaver. They first lived in a one room house where Andrew, their eldest was born on 25 October 1866. Grandfather Robert worked as a woodman and farmer. They moved into a two room house and bought more furniture. By now they owned two plates, one cup, one bowl, one dish pan, one frying pan and one cook kettle. Grandfather made two chairs and an extra table and Grandfather Bohn gave them a small crib. A baby was about due and a supple of goods came in from Salt Lake City. Sophia bought 3 yards of factory for three diapers and cloth to make two dresses, two binders, two shirts and two gowns for the baby. She made two towels and had one bar of soap for washing the baby. The first born was a baby boy born 25 October 1866 and named for his Grandfather Andrew as he was born on his 51st birthday. Next a baby girl was born on the 24 January 1869. She was named MARGARET FIFE PATTERSON. Then there were nine boys born. Joseph Adolph, Robert, Thomas Oscar, Adam Sharp, Albert, Lewis, William, James and Horace. Joseph is believed to have been born down on the farm at Devil Creek between beaver and Greenville along with all the other boys except James and Horace who were born at the house now owned by Horace Patterson. Uncle Jim and Uncle Horace are the only ones left. Grandpa and Grandma were good kind and ambitious people. They were pioneers for sure. Grandma was a midwife and doctor for many people She counted 80 babies that she helped into this world. Many, many nights she spent out with all kinds of illnesses. They honored their name of Patterson and Bohn. Anyone having that heritage should keep all stains from themselves and hold their heads high for the people before us gave us such to be proud of and respect as long as there is one of us left. So let us carry on and make something of ourselves that the name Patterson will ever be one of praise. Many more sheets could be written about our people that would be very interesting and helpful to us all. Grandma Marlin Patterson’s Book of Remembrance has many family group sheets. God help us to live right to love each other and keep us smiling. Written in 1961 by Marlin Patterson
