cause of death - poisoned by strychnine

Bendigo Advertiser 15 Jan 1863
SUICIDE of a SQUATTER.-In our last we stated that the above was rumoured on the Billabong ; the following are the details:-An inquiry was held by H. Baylis. Esq., P.M., on Saturday, the 27th ultimo, at the Tootol station into the circumstances of the death of Mr. Robert Irvine, who had expired on the previous day after swallowing strychnine. Mrs. Irwin deposed that, on the previous Monday, deceased bad come out from Wagga Wagga to the station. He appeared rather stupid from the effects of drinking. On Christmas Day he appeared, however, to be quite recovered. On that day he got the worse for liquor, and was walking about and talking as if to persons around him. Yesterday morning he was lying on the sofa, and called witness in from the kitchen to give him a drink. When witness came in, he said, "Make haste, make haste, I've taken poison." Witness then saw a bottle in the fire place near the. head of the sofa, with a spoon and a pint of water beside it. Knew the bottle contained strychnine, procured by deceased some two years ago to poison native dogs. Mr. Lacy was present when he said he had taken poison. Attempts were made to give him drink, but he was so convulsed, and his head so thrown back, that it was impossible to do so. He screamed dreadfully at intervals of about three minutes, and expired about twenty minutes after witness had entered the room. During the last three or four years he had constantly threatened to destroy himself when in liquor. Mr. Robert Lacy deposed that, between nine and ten a.m. on the previous day. Mrs. Irvine called out, to him that deceased had taken poison . Went to him, and found him in great agony. - He said, " I am not fit to live; pray for me, Mr. Lacey; keep the children away, poor things; don't let them see me." From the time witness entered the room till - deceased expired was about ten or fifteen minutes. On the Monday night previous he had threatened to poison himself. Dr. A. B. Morgan deposed that the symptoms described were such as would have been occasioned by strychnia. Mr. Irvine was a very old resident on the Billabong, and leaves a widow and seven children --- Pastoral Times
