A SHOCKING ACCIDENT, (By Telegraph.)
Edward Darwen, an elderly farmer, after delivering a load of produce at the Jettv shed, was about to return home late yesterday afternoon with a team, of three young horses, when the team was frightened by a train and bolted up the main street. Darwen, who was in the dray, finding he was unable to check the horses, made an attempt to leave it over the shaft, but when springing his foot became entangled in a thick rope, with the result that he was pulled back under the horses feet, receiving terrible injuries from the horses and wheels, which subsequently passed over him. When he became free Darwen was in a terrible state, having a leg and arm broken, portions of the scalp were torn away, and his chest severely crushed in, He was removed to the hospital, where he died at midnight.
Mr. Darwin, who was a brother to the proprietor of the "Independent," was a native of the district, and leaves a widow and a grown-up family of one married daughter and two sons

SAD DEATH.
Mr E. Darwen, who met with such a serious accident on Monday afternoon last through being run over by his own dray, passed away a little after midnight as a result of the great injuries received. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon from the Kennedy Hospital to the new cemetery, to which the deceased was followed by thirty members of the Druid’s Lodge, of which he had been a member since the establishment of the branch here (about 20 years) and a large number of other friends and relatives. Rev. Hills performing the last sad rites. He was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs James Darwen, of Bolton, Lancashire, England, and a native of Bowen being born on the Don in the year 1865, 47, years ago. He had a varied experience, as spare boy on the roads, milkboy in the early days of Herberton, bark stripping at that place, mining in the early days of Ravenswood, sailorising in the steamer Dove, cutter P.C.R, and Henrietta, ploughing at Seaforth: (Mackay) and at Airdmillan (Ayr) and most kinds of labouring work. He was employed for several years at Merinda Meatworks, eventually settling on the land and becoming a very successful farmer. He was a quiet inoffensive man, greatly respected by all those who knew him, and a hard worker as the result of his past ten years labours—his little farm— amply testifies, and his loss will be sadly felt by those nearest and dearest to him. He leaves a widow, two sons, Messrs Wilfred and Allan Darwen a daughter [Mrs C. Fraser, Merinda), a sister (Mrs. Spencer, Bowen) and two brothers, Mr W, H. Darwen (of this office) and Mr J. Darwen (Ayr) to mourn their sad loss.

The death occurred at Bowen yesterday of Mrs. Sarah Eliza Wells, a well known resident of that town, after a short illness. Born in Newbury (England) nearly 64 years ago, the late Mrs. Wells, whose maiden name was Woodward, came to Queensland in the steamer Duranda, in 1888, and with the exception of spending about 12 months in Brisbane, had resided in Bowen ever since. Deceased was twice married, her first husband (Mr. Edward Darwen) passing away as a result of a serious accident in 1912. She leaves one son, Mr. W. Darwen, North Arm), and a daughter, Mrs. C. R. Fraser (Bowen). Deceased was a prominent worker in the interest of the Red Cross during the late war, and as a result she was one of the few in Queensland who received the special medal presented for such conduct.
