MR. SAMUEL SOPER.
Another, pioneer of the Lower Burdekin
passed away when Mr. Samuel
Soper breathed his last in Craigdhu
Private Hospital, Ayr, at the age of
65 years, his ailment being heart
trouble, from which he had been
suffering for the past six months. Landing
on the Burdekin in the early
eighties the late Mr. Soper was one of
the first men to grub a tree on the
old Seaforth Plantation at the time
of the erection of the mill bearing
that name. For several years
following the deceased carried out the
trade of brickmaker at the various
sugar mills then in the district, and
upon the erection of Pioneer Mill was
engaged as a fitter for some years,
leaving that position to go to Selheim
as an engineer at the smelting works.
The late Mr. Soper took up a block
of land on the Inkerman Resumption
some 14 years ago, and successfully
pursued the career of sugar farming
at the time of his death. In 1914.
the first year that Inkerman Mill
crushed, the deceased was engaged as
driver of the crushing engines. A
widow and grown-up family of five
sons and four daughters are left to
mourn, being Messrs. S. Soper (Bowen),
W. Soper (Sydney), Bert, Ernest
and Henry Soper'. ((Burdekin), and
Mesdames A. W Cowley, P. Dutton,
H. Lowe and W. Cornish.
The funeral, largely attended, left
the Home Hill, station (the body being
brought to Home Hill for interment)
The service was; conducted by Rev.'
Norman Michael, C. of E.
