Comments
Merchant and shipowner Arrived in Hobart as surgeon on board the "Dubuc" in 1808; built the "Henrietta Packet"; he was a member of the Lieutenant Governor's Court in 1818; received a grant of land at Richmond and also held land at a number of other locations.

Thomas Birch, who built Macquarie
House.about 1816, ls recorded by the
early Press to have built, the first
brick house in Hobart Town. Alto-
gether he built nine brick houses in
Hobart. ' Formerly Macquarie House
had a flat roof on which stood a
small cannon taken from the whaler
which brought Birch to Tasmania in
1808.
in 1821, two years after the death
of Birch, the house was licensed; as
an inn and kept by a man named
Hodgson, and John E. Cox reopened
it as an inn during 1831. The same
man began the first coach service
between Hobart and Launceston in
1822-23. Macquarie House was open-
ed as a boarding establishment in
1841. Later it again became,an inn
and after that it was St. Mary's
Seminary.
