Sydney Stock and Station Journal 28th July 1916
Death of Mr. J. H.
Brunker.
Mr. James Henry Brunker, the well
known northern auctioneer, passed
away in the Newcastle Hospital on
Monday night. He had been in bad
health for about three months, and
had only returned a few days ago
when a relapse necessitated his re
moval to the hospital.
The deceased was a son of the late
Hon. J. N. Brunker, M.P., and a
native of East Maitland, 60 years of
age. Until about three years ago
he was one of the most active and
popular residents of Maitand. Edu
cated at Newington College, he quali
fied for the civil service, but three
years' experience in the Government
Stamps office made him tired to depart
mental work, and he returned to Mait
land, to enter the services of Messrs.
Brunker and Sparke, auctioneers, etc..
He followed his father into the firm
of Brunker. Wolfe, and Badgery. and
Brunker and Wolfe, and in 1895 joined
his father in the firm of Messrs. J.
N. Brunker and Son, which he man-
aged up to his departure from Mait-
land in 1913. He was the founder
of the Farmers' Union sales, which
have developed, into the largest pro-
duce sales of the State, and in recog
nition of his services to them the
farmers presented him with an illu-
minated address and a valuable presen-
tation. He was a licensed auctioneer;
for 40 years, and was regarded as one
of the best salesmen in the State. One
of his most important sales was that
of the town allotments of Kurri Kurri,
when he sold the famous hotel allot
ments tor £1000. The buyer failed
to get the license, and paid the £250
forfeit. He took an active part in
Parliamentary elections, being one of
the principal supporters of the late
Mr. John Gillies for many years. He
refused to be drawn into the political
field himself, although requested to do
so on several occasions. He was for
two terms an alderman of West Mait
land, entering the council on each oc
casion at the head of the poll against
strong men. He took a keen interest
in all .sport; and was president of the
old Pearl Cricket Club and of the Hun
ter Rugby Union, and patron of the
Hunter Rugbv League. He was a
supporter of the Hunter Cricket Asso
ciation, Maitland Water Brigade, and
Volunteer Fire Brigade. He also held
office on the hospital commiitee. and
on every committee established for pro
gress in West Maitland. He was fear
less in the expression of his views,
but was generous to a fault, and com
manded the respect of all with whom
he was associated. He is survived
by his wife and family of three sons
and five daughters, the children being
Privates James and Arthur Brunker.
who are with the Australian Forces,
Mr. Keith Brunker (on the staff at
Victoria Barracks), and .Mesdames
Bloomfield and .M'Culloch. Misses Bes
sie, Joyce, and Zita Brunker. He has
three brothers and. one sister — Messrs.
George (manager of the East .Maitland
branch of the Government Savings
Bank), Arthur (of the Customs Depart
ment, Sydney), and Ernest Brunker
(West- Maitland), and Mrs. Sherbon,
wife of Major Sherbon. of Victoria
