Death of
Mr. W. A. Tully,
Suddenly in Sydney.
The death took place yesterday in Sydney
of Mr. William Alcock Tully, B.A.,
F .R.G.S., a well known Queensland resident,
from failure of the heart, at the age of 75.
Mr. Tully left his home on a visit to the
southern capital recently, and he was ap
parently in his usual health. Born and
educated in Ireland, he took his B.A. degree
at the Dublin University, and when 20 years
of age he sailed for Australia. At
first he settled in Tasmania as a surveyor,
but during the mining boom in Victoria he
went to that State ; afterwards he came
to Queensland. Joining the civil ser
vice, he rose pretty rapidly, until in
1804 he was appointed acting Under Secre
tary for Lands, and Iater on was gazetted to
the post permanently. In 1879 he
became Surveyor-General in conjunction
with his other position. In 1882
he gave up the Under Secretaryship. A few
years later he vacated the Surveyor-General
ship to become a member of the Land Board,
which position he retained till 1901.
His wife was a daughter of Major Darvall,
of Sydney, but she died some years ago.
Eight- children survive, including Ald.
Tully, who left for Sydney this morning.
Personal Notes:
Trove
William Tully, surveyor, was born on 14 March 1830 in Dublin, Ireland. In 1846 he matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A., 1852). He arrived at Hobart Town, Tasmania, in the convict ship Lord Dalhousie on 14 August 1852. Tully entered the public service as a road surveyor on 1 May 1853 and later became a contract surveyor until 31 December 1858 when he was appointed inspecting surveyor. He was a foundation member of the Tasmanian Club and in 1860 at Hobart he married Louisa, granddaughter of Simeon Lord. She died in 1866. Tully arrived in Queensland in October 1863 as a commissioner of crown lands in the Kennedy and Warrego pastoral districts. On 1 December 1864 he was appointed deputy-chief commissioner of lands and on 16 August 1866 under-secretary for public lands and chief commissioner of crown lands. In 1875 he was made surveyor-general. The town of Tully and the Tully River in North Queensland are named after him. Tully retired on 31 December 1900. He died of heart disease in his home, Luciani, Bayswater Road, Sydney, on 26 April 1905 and was buried at St Anne's Church of England, Ryde. On 27 May 1868 at Ryde he had married Sarah Anne Darvall. Their four children and two from his first marriage survived him.
