TYRE REPAIRER FINED £25
Charged at St Kilda Court on five counts of contravention of the con- trol of rubber distribution of motor tyres and tubes order of National Security Regulations, William Joseph Markwell, tyre repairer, of High st, St Kilda, was yesterday fined £5, with £ 1/1/ costs, on each charge by Mr Hill, PM.

David Anthony Phillipson, an in- vestigation officer of the Supply Department, gave evidence on four charges against Markwell relating to alleged repair by him of tyres with- out priorities and contrary to provisions of the order. Markwell told witness that he had not inspected owners' priorities. Asked by Mr Phillipson to show his books, Markwell said that he did not keep any records of work done by him. He said that rubber used for the repairs was bought by Markwell as scrap.

On the fifth charge, that of having submitted a misleading statement in regard to stocks of rubber held by him, Markwell was also found guilty. Markwell pleaded not guilty to all charges. A stay of seven days was granted. Mr F. J. Sullivan, for the Crown solicitor, prosecuted.
