MR. J. H. POWELL
Mr. Joseph Henry Powell, of West
Wyalong, and formerly of Winnunga,
died at his home in Golden Street,
West Wyalong, yesterday, aged 85
years.
The funeral will move from the
RC Church this afternoon at 3 p.m.
for the Wyalong Cemetery.
A further reference to the late
Mr. Powell, who was well known in
the Ungarie district, will be made
in the next issue of the "Advocate."

OBITUARY
MR. J. H. POWELL
Mr. Joseph Henry Powell of West
Wyalong, passed away at his home
in Golden Street on Sunday, after
suffering a collapse earlier in the
day.
Deceased had reached the advanced
age of 85 years, and had not been
in good health, having suffered a
stroke in January of last year.
A native of Ireland, where he was
born at county Nenagh, the late Mr
Powell went to New Zealand with two
of his brothers when he was 16 years
of age. Leaving his brothers in New
Zealand, he came to Australia, where
in lived in the Burrowa and Galong
districts for many years.
In 1926 he commenced farming at
Winnunga, where he lived until al
most three years ago, when with Mrs
Powell and members of his family
he moved to West Wyalong.
The late Mr. Powell lived for the
major portion of his life on the land,
and he was a lover of horses. His
services, after coming to Winnunga,
were sought by the Burrowa Show So
ciety as a judge. He was an indus
trious fanner, and he commanded the
respect and esteem of all who knew
him.
He was twice married. In addition
to Mrs. Powell he leaves three sons
and three daughters. They are Thom
as (RAAF. Pacific), William (Un
garie, and Joseph (West Wyalong),
Mrs. T. Glasgow (Tullibigeal), and
Miss Margaret Powell of West Wya
long.
Included in those who attended the
funeral. which moved from the R.C.
Church on Monday afternoon were
several old friends from the Win
nunga and Ungarie districts. The ser
vice was conducted by Rev. Father
T. Lynch.
Messrs R. and G. Stephenson, West
Wyalong, were in charge of the mor
tuary arrangements

OBITUARY
MRS. BRIDGET POWELL
Mrs. Bridget Theresa Powell, who
died in the Wyalong and District Hos
pital on Monday morning, has been a
resident of Golden Street, West Wya
long, for the past three years.
For about 18 years the Powell
family were well known in Ungarie
district, where they had a farming
property until they came to West
Wyalong to live. Her husband, the
late Mr. Joseph Powell, died in West
Wyalong 11 months ago.
Deceased was Miss Bridget Mc
Mahon of Crookwell, where she liv
ed until the death of her parents,
after which she went to Sydney.
Later her marriage took place, and
Mr. and Mrs. Powell and family were
on the land at Galong for about 20
years until they moved to the Un
garie district.
The late Mrs. Powell held the af
fectionate regard of all with whom
she came in contact, and her com
paratively sudden passing is keenly
regretted by her friends in West
Wyalong and Ungarie.
Three sons and five daughters sur
vive. They are John (Tom), who is
in the RAAF, and who is on his way
home from New Guinea, William, of
Ungarie, and Joseph of West Wya
long. The daughters are Mrs. T.
Glasgow, of Tullibigeal and Miss Mar
garet Powell, of West Wyalong.
Mr. Jack McMahon, of Binda, near
Crookwell, and Mr. Michael McMa
hon, of Laggan, Crookwell, are bro
thers, and Mrs. Cahill, of Ashfield, is
a sister of the late Mrs. Powell. Three
sisters predeceased her.
The funeral took place at West
Wyalong on Tuesday, the interment
being made in the Roman Catholic
portion of the Wyalong cemetery.
Messrs R. and G. Stephenson were
in charge of the mortuary arrange
ments.
