I am belatedly writing to thank you for sharing your family history information and to blame you for starting me off again on something I had given up nearly twenty years ago.

I am a direct descendant of Christopher Oates JAMES, a relation of yours by marriage I gather.

Shortly after my father died in 1985 I felt a responsibility to assemble as much family history data as could then be gathered before too much vanished with departing kin. I was working in Canberra at the time, with access to the National Library and its newspaper collection, and so was able to make fair progress until I hit the inevitable brick walls. It would have been the early nineties when I decided to take what turned out to be an extended pause.

At that stage I knew from the various BMD certificates I had acquired that my great-great-grandfather was Christopher Oates JAMES, a mine manager who had emigrated from Cornwall in the 1850s, presumably lured by the Victorian gold rush (though there is a suggestion in some of the other family research I am aware of that he started in the South Australian copper mines).

One of the brick walls I had come up against was the fate of his son, my great-grandfather William John JAMES. Working back through BMD certificates I had established his birth in Daylesford in 1866 and had tracked him through his marriage to Ellen STEWART in Syndey in 1890. My grandmother, Marjorie Jessie Draper JAMES was born in Newcastle and I discovered with a great deal of eyestrain through peering at microfilmed copies of the Newcastle Morning Herald that he had been president of the Newcastle Shop Employees' Association as well as president of the Newcastle Early Closing Movement (whose mission was to make shops close earlier) in the 1890s. He was then a grocer but at other times was a commercial traveller.

Over a number of years, he was mentioned frequently in the pages of the NMH but on 13 July 1898 was reported as having left the district. And that's where the trail went cold. I knew he had moved to Queensland but could find no trace of him.

A few weeks ago I idly googled 'Christopher Oates JAMES' and found your site. I was intrigued when I saw that William John JAMES had died in 1941. I obtained his death certificate (much more expensive than they were back in the '90s!) and learned that he died in the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum (which was on North Stradbroke Island). I gather from this that he died in impoverished circumstances and that somewhere along the way he and his wife Ellen had parted company. She had married again in 1915 and died in Sydney in 1936.

When I find the time I will make a more thorough search for what happened in the intervening years. At this point I would just like to thank you for giving me a valuable clue.

Afflicted again with the desire to disinter ancestors, I have subscribed to ancestry.com for a year (I was sceptical at first but their British census records have been of great assistance) and have placed a vestigial version of my family tree on their site. I am attaching a PDF derived from that tree to illustrate the link between Christopher Oates JAMES and me. In the spirit of reciprocity I can provide you with scans of my JAMES material if any of it is of interest to you.

I suppose I should conclude by idenitfying myself. I was a pupil of your father's when he taught at Kalpowar Primary School all those years ago. I believe our mothers still keep in touch.
