JOSEPH COWAN.
Another link with the past was broken by the death of Joseph Cowan, which took place on the 18th of August last at the age of 72 years, after a short illness, the cause of death being an affection of the heart. The funeral took place on the 19th, many very old friends being among those who paid their last respects. Rev. Father Walsh (R.C. Church) officiated at the graveside. Born in County Westmeath, Ire-land, he landed in Brisbane on the sailing ship "The Ramsay" in the year 1875. Came to Bowen in the following year and in 1887 married Mary, only daughter of the late James and Anne Carey, of that town. Joe, as he was familiarly known by his many friends, was a man of sterling qualities and most enterprising nature. His first job in Bowen was with the late G. R. Morris, in the grocery business. Later he worked on the building of that fine brick edifice known as the Court House. He also worked for some time on the extension of the old jetty and on the erection of the telegraph line from Ayr to Cape Bowling Green. A man who always loved a good horse and stock in general, he soon got established in the stock raising business. Buying Rosebank from J. Dalton, unstocked, he built up a fine breed of horses and for many years anything that carried the 4LO brand was noted for its quality. Later on he selected and established Glenore Station. When redwater struck the district he was wiped out but being of the stout-hearted school he came nearer town, purchased some land on the Don River and carried on dairying for some years and then turned towards farming and established the well-known farm, Avon dale. In the year 1912 he went back to Glenore, which place he sold out early in 1918, to Robert Matthews Frederick, late of Proserpine Station. Being still of a most energetic nature he established Clonard Farm, where he lived for a short period, leaving to retire in Brisbane, not being satisfied with the climate here, but returned to Bo-wen and bought a nice home in Livingstone Street, where he lived, in retirement until the time of his death. It can be truthfully said of Joe that he was an honest, good, stout-hearted man. He is survived by his wife, three daughters; Mrs. J. Lott, Proserpine, Mrs. J. Callaghan and Mrs, V. Boulter, Bowen, and two sons, John and Stephen of Bowen, and 24 grandchildren.
