MR WILLIAM M. RILEY.
Very general regret was expressed in
Ararat on Friday last when it became known
that Mr William M. Riley, bootmaker, of
this town, had succumbed to an attack of
pneumonia, following influenza. For a considerable
time past the deceased had been in
failing health, and when he fell a victim to
the prevailing epidemic he was removed to
the local hospital, and made such good progress
that he was able to leave the institution.
He, however, contracted a fresh cold,
and rapidly sank, expiring late on Thursday
night at the age of 48 years. The deceased
was a Yorkshire man, but he came to this
colony as a lad, and he settled in Ararat.
He, however, subsequently removed to
Landsborough, and on the falling off of the
rush there went to Hamilton, but recently
he again returned to Ararat, and followed
his trade here. Old residents of the town will
have a kindly recollection of the keen interest
the deceased, as a young man, took in
athletic sports, and of his good services in
the cricket and football field. He leaves a
widow and a family of six, several of whom
are grown up, to mourn his loss. His remains
were interred at Ararat on Sunday,
being followed to their last resting-place by
a number of old-time friends.
