Bowen Independent 27 Feb 1923
News was received on Sunday
last of the death of Mr. Robert Gray
which took place at Charters Tow
ers on that morning. Deceased had
been at that place for some time
past undergoing medical treatment
for a skin affection. Mrs. Gray,
who recently disposed of the Strand
Hotel, had been with him for sever
al weeks past. Information receiv
ed later stated that deceased had
committed suicide by cutting his
throat in a bathroom at the Hospital.

A message received yesterday
morning stated Mr Gray’s body was
being brought to Bowen for burial.
He leaves a wife and a grown-up
family of two sons and two daugh
ters to mourn their loss.
The late Bob Gray was an old
identy of the North and a man of
many parts. In his younger days
he followed racing and once trained
Ralston, Caledonian and Sister
Mary for the late Hugh Strickland
and rode Caledonian over the
hurdles at Townsville, the aged son
of Horatio causing a sensation by
taking him over the iron fence at
Cluden. Caledonian afterwards
won an A.J.C. Steeplechase and
Ralston the Q.T.C. Australian Cup.
Originally Bob hailed from the
Downs and at one time was employ
ed by the late John Finnie at Dray
ton. He opened the first oyster
saloon in Bowen at the time the
railway was being built and needless
to say, being an innovation,
it was well patronised. For
many years be engaged in net and
trap fishing and had a great fancy
for marine curios, in fact for cur
ios of all descriptions. He was an
enthusiastic fowl fancier having a
liking for the best of
breeds only having been
a big Show prize winner.
He left Bowen several times but re
turned and settled down here again.
