from death reg of son John from Ancestry tree - Spence/Sparrow/Kendall/ Peterson/Howarth/Carey etc Notes on the military that Shepherd Howarth served in: July 1845 the 11th Headquarters of the North Devonshire Regiment and three companies sailed from Chatham to Sydney on board the Castle Eden The balance of the Regiment sailed on the "Ramilies" in Aug 1845. Transferred to Hobart but due to internal discipline problems with the 99th Regiment, they were recalled to Sydney in 1846 to restore Law and order. In 1857 the Regiment returned to England Ancestry - Smolders, Brabbins, Heesen, Howarth & Jeffery Family Tree Some time prior to 1848, Shephard Howarth arrived in the penal settlement of Port Arthur, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) discovered & claimed for Holland by Abel Tasman in 1642, who was the first to circumnavigate New Holland ( Australia ), as a member of the 11th Regiment of the British Army.This regiment later moved to Sydney to quell a possible rebellion. Shephard Howarth married Ann Crawford in Sydney in 1848. Their son John, was born on Oct 23 1849 at Victoria Barracks in Paddington.
