OBITUARY
Mrs. Alex McDowell
A former well known resident of
Hay district, Mrs. Sarah Alice Mc
Dowell, wife of Mr. Alex McDowell,
died in the Leeton Hospital on Sun
day afternoon.'
Mrs. McDowell, who was 65 years
of age, was born in Dover, England,
and came to Australia 53 years ago.
She was a member of the Latham
family, who for a time made their
home in Hay and on the irrigation
area. Afterwards some of the fam
ily went to West Australia, where a
brother, Mr. T. Latham, became a
successful farmer, and entered the
political arena, where he also was
successful, being leader of the State
Country Party, and also leader of the
Opposition. He was married at Hay
to Miss Louisa Allworden. The de
ceased lady was also married at Hay
to Mr. McDowell at the age of 23.
The latter's father, the late Jas.
McDowell, was one of the successful
small holders — there were very few
of them — who made their home near
Hay. He took up Uri Farm, which
his son carried on for a time after
his death, and then went to Leeton
Irrigation Area, where he has been
successful, and where the family have
resided for a number of years at
Stanbridge. His father came to Aus
tralia in the same ship that brought
back a neighbour, the late Alex Mil
liken, after his marriage in Ireland.
Mr. and Mrs. McDowell were high
ly esteemed while at Hay, and were
amongst the most active workers for
the welfare of the Methodist Church.
Much sympathy is expressed for the
bereaved husband and the two sur
viving sons.

(Clovelly), Mrs V. Hayes (Dar-
ling Point), Mr R. Latham (Hill-
ston) Mr C. G.Latham (ex-Sena-
tor, West Australia) and Mr A.
Latham (W.A.), an invalid from
the last war. Another brother,
Tom., was killed at Bullecourt,
during 1914-18.
Deceased had resided on the
Irrigation Area for 26 years, 11
of which were spent at San-
bridge, a like period at South
Gogeldrie, and the past four
years at Wamoon. Mrs McDowell
was Secretary of the. P. and C.
Association at Stanbridge for 9
years, and for six years at South
Gogeldie.
