RICHARD ASHWORTH.
Most people in this town knew "Dick" Ashworth, and were glad to know him. Those who did not, have reason for regret. His was a bright, brave spirit. Always cheerful and hopeful his optimism was contagious, and it was impossible to be sad in his company. For many years he was the moving spirit in "soccer"— down at Queenton. Dick came from a county in England that is famous in the game— Lancashire. To aid him to his social bent, nature had, endowed him with a silvery tenor voice, which he used during his life without ever getting any enlargement of the cranium. As a member of a Liedertafel he was as useful as he was loyal.
The Fates dealt harshly with so gentle a spirit keeping him for over twenty weeks to his sick bed, but now at last he has passed hence and knows the great grand Secret. He died at the age of 50 years in the manner that most men wish to die, respected and loved for his virtues. By his decease the town has lost a grand worker, and an unpretentious, bluntly honest and kindly man amongst men.
Yesterday afternoon a large number of his friends attended his funeral. His brethren of the Masonic Lodge Amity E.C. and Members of the Liedertafel walked before the hearse. The Rev. J. Scarfe conducted the burial service in a quietly impressive manner, after which the beautiful service of the Masonic Order was read by Wor. Bro. Sladden and the Masonic Choir sang with great feeling "Here, in the Vale" and "Sleep thy last sleep."
