From Find A Grave - Joe Allport notes 1844-1886 – Background and Life of Thomas Allport Thomas Allport was born around 1844 (possibly 1 January 1845) in Cork, Ireland where his parents Joseph and Allport were living at the time of his birth. Later documents indicate that his middle name was most likely Hewitt, which was his mother's maiden name. At the age of 14, Thomas Allport was indentured as an apprentice in the merchant navy for a period of 4 years, beginning on 15 January 1858 and ending in 1862. By 1867, Thomas Allport had moved to San Francisco, California, United States and was working as a mariner. In 1869, 25-year-old Thomas Allport took command of a ship named the Fayaway, a small schooner with a rich history, as well as a connection to literary author Herman Melville, best known for his novel Moby Dick, who likely saw the Fayaway on a trip to San Francisco in October 1860. The vast majority of Captain Thomas Allport's voyages moved between Mendocino County, California—a port at the heart of the redwood lumber trade—and San Francisco lumber dealers. By the end of 1870, some of his voyages had begun taking Thomas Allport slightly further afield, such as north towards Sonoma County and south toward Los Angeles; however, all of his trips except for his final voyage appear to have remained along the California coast. On 16 June 1870, 26-year-old Thomas Hewitt Allport married 17- year-old Rhoda Therese Sansbury in Mendocino County, CaliforniaMay 2024.
