A VERY popular wedding was celebrated in the Presbyterian Church last night, the con tracting parties being Miss Agnes Madill, third daughter of Mr. R, Madill of Alfred -street, and Mr. W Christoe, of Longreach, and son of Mr. J. P. Christoe, of this town.

The community, generally, and Far- lelgh district in particular, were deeply moved when they learned of the death on Tuesday of William Herbert Ber wick Christoe, who passed away early that morning after a comparatively brief illness. Deceased was secretary of Farlelgh Cooperative Sugar Milling Association, and a citizen whose actlv- ties in many spheres of public endeav or since coming to this district, about 30 years ago, were uniformly valu able. Farlelgh is indebted for much of its progress to Mr. Christoe's un tiring association with Its social and industrial activities. Deceased was born at Orange , (N.S. Wales) on March 22, 1863, and was the son of the. late Mr. J.P. Christoe, mining assayer and geologist, who was for many years connected with mining in terests in Central Queensland, and was a grandson of Dr. Blood Smyth Deceased's father was closely identi fied with mining development In N.S. Wales and Queensland. He was early on Cloncurry and had extensive In terests In Copperfleld, also being as sociated with other well-known fields. After a number of years In N.S. Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, the family head returned to Central Queensland, and subsequently came to Mackay. It was at Clermont that de- ceased, as a young man, joined the A.J.S. Bank. He rapidly rose to the position of accountant, and while oc cupying this position at Rockhamp ton he resigned to accept a position with his brother-in-law, the late Aub urn Dowling, on Talgai West station, in the Toowomba district. Later he re turned to Clermont, and started business on his own account as stock, station, and commission agent. 'Min- ing was In the blood,' as he often re marked, and the urge for the touch of gold— which opened mountains and 'unlocked lands'— created visions or roads leading to some new Eldorado. It was during a holiday visit to his father who was managing mining operations at Eungella and Mt. Brit ten, that he met and married Miss Agnes M. Madill. The marriage took place in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church and was performed by the Rev. Dr. Gibson. M.A., a. particular friend of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Christoe resided in the Central West for several years, but about 30 years ago came to Mac kay. His first engagement was on the clerical staff of Plane Creek mill and a year later he was engaged by the then Farleigh Estate Sugar Co. Ltd., as accountant. He retained this position until the mill was purchased by the farmers, when he was ap pointed secretary, of the Farleigh Co operative Sugar Milling Association, which position he held until his death closed a fine record of 29 years con tinuous service, during which he saw many changes in the industry. He had the satisfaction of seeing the mill win through to its present high standard of efficiency, and, holding such an important executive position, he was deserving of some share of the credit of the success that was at tained. He was a man of remarkable vitality and enjoyed splendid health up till quite recently. When compelled to enter a private hospital a few weeks go it was the first occasion he had been an inmate of any hospital. A heart affection developed from an attack of asthma, and he was unable to withstand the complications that supervened, though hopes were held out frequently that his indomitable will would enable him to pull through. He had reached the age of 71 years. He was quietly popular with the mill management, staff, employees, and suppliers, and his numerous acts of kindness and consideration will not soon be forgotten. Apart from his official position as mill secretary, Farleigh has reason to remember him. He was the first school committee secretary, and it was due largely to his efforts that a State school was established in the locality. For a number of years he was secretary of Farleigh School of Arts, and treasurer of the Farlelgh Presbyterian Church. A splendid ath lete. In his young days, he engaged in many branches of sport. He excelled at cricket and was a Central Queens land representative for many years. After taking up residence at Farleigh he often displayed the artistry of his younger days and was always willing to direct youthful players along cor rect lines. . He was a selector of Far lelgh Cricket Club, and its official um pire. During the Great War he was an indefatigable worker for providing comforts for the men on active service. In this work his capacity for organ isation was brought to the forefront, and he built a lasting reputation for the excellence and efficiency of his management of all activities with which hewas associated. The Farleigh Sock and Comfort fund was inaugur ated by him, and Diggers well know the cheer which they received as a result of this fine effort. The confid ence reposed in 'Bill' Christoe, as he was familiarly known, was an as surance of generous public support. and his many sterling qualities inspired helpers to greater deeds. The present Honor Roll at Farleigh is another memorial to his public spirited actions and in numerous other directions can be found testimony at Farleigh of the service performed by him. The free dom of his home to all callers, hospit ality, advice, and help were gifts which he distributed widely. His de mise occasioned expressions of pro found sympathy and many were the fine tributes paid to one of noble and unselfish character who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and one son. The daugh ters are Mrs. L. Dowzer (Tully), Mrs. R . Magee (River Estate, Mackay), and Miss Muriel Christoe (Farleigh) and son, Mr. Richard Christoe (Far lelgh). He leaves three grandchild ren. Also surviving him is his step- mother, Mrs. J.P. Christoe (Brls-. -bane), brother, Mr. C.P.; Christoe, who is also residing in Brisbane, re- cently retired from the position of Secretary and accountant with Buss Bros., Bundaberg and better known in Mackay as liquidator of Farleigh mill; also a sister, Mrs. Auburn Dowling (Toowoomba) . Surviving brothers and sisters of Mrs. Christoe are Messrs. J. W. Madill (Marian), J. R. Madill (Mareeba), Mrs. D. S. McBrlde (Nambour), and Mrs. W. S. Davies (Townsville) As a mark of respect Farleigh mill was closed on Tuesday afternoon to allow the staff and employees to at tend the funeral, which took place from St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, where service was conducted by Rev. R. Bardon, B.A., who also conducted the service at the graveside. The funeral cortege was large and very representative. Pall-bearers were : — Messrs. T. G. Mulherin (former Chairman of Farleigh mill directors), R. I. Robertson (present Chairman), W. B. Fordyce (director), A. G. Powell (manager National Bank), J. W. Madill, and F. Knobel. Domes, wreaths, floral tributes, and messages of sympathy were received in large numbers. Public tributes were for waicli'il by Farleigh mill staff, Cane Suppliers, Mill Employees, Directors, Engine-drivers, and Fitters, Farleighg Estate Sugar Co., (Bundaberg), Dir ectors Racecourse Cooperative Sugar Association, Directors and Officers Amalgamated Sugar Mills Ltd.. Mac kay Sugar Manufacturers' Association, Directors and Staff, Shepherds Anvil Stores, Directors, Manager, and Staff of North Eton Mill, Camerons Pty. Ltd., Beirne Ltd., T. J. Leonard and C.
