OBITUARY
WILLIAM MAITLAND
Of the many who have, from time to
time, passed from this life, the sub
ject of this obituary, was certainly one
of the most outstanding in the public
eye over a period of many years in
Condobolin and district, and, beyond
all doubt, deservedly one of the most
respected.
Born at Oyne, at the foot of Ben-
Achie, Aberdeen, Scotland, on the 14th
October, 1885, Mr. Maitland came to
Australia 47 years ago and entered
the employment of David Jones &
Co. Sydney, in the drapery depart
ment. From there he came direct to
Condobolin and took charge of the
drapery department for Thomas Wat
son. Staying there a year or so, he
went to a drapery firm in Albury.
Next he went to Grenfell, and after be
ing a short time in business on his
own, he joined in partnership with the
firm of Purdie and Co., in 1891. After
being there five years he came back
to Condobolin, in that terrible time
when so many banks closed. His first
business premises, on his own, were
those now occupied by Mr. Chas.
Steward. From there he removed to
premises (since destroyed by fire) in
the position where now stands the
business of Mr. Alf Bradshaw, thence
to Leadingham's store premises and
later to the present business site, then
occupied by the late Mr. Mat. Boul-
ton. The business of William Mait
land was formed into a company und
er the title of William Maitland &
Co., Limited, in 1923, and since when
various managers have been employed,
and Mr. Maitland taking very little
personal interest of late years, main
ly on account of ill-health, being the
past two years practically confined to
his home.
It would require columns to enum
erate all the good actions of Mr.
Maitland both in public and private
life. He was an alderman for many
years, mayor several years, always an
outstanding supporter of the show
society, and the same of the jockey
club up to recent years, many years
on the hospital committee prior to the
new Board scheme, great suppporter
of the School of Arts, among the pri
mary movers in the formation of the
bowling club, and a foundations mem
ber of thg local Masonic Lodge and
of which he remained one of the most
esteemed members, but, above all,
he stood out so prominently during
the Great War period as one ever
ready with his financial and moral
support— none better.
Married in Condobolin on Septem-
ber 17, 1891, to Miss Robertson, the
union resulted in a family of three,
Mrs. J. L'Estrange, Mrs. Hodgins, and
Keith. It was a happy wedded life,
the last 12 years in the beautiful new
home, named "'Ben-Achie"after deceas-
ed's birthplace. Indeed, the delightful
home is just truly typical of the re-
fined and cultured tastes of both hus-
band and wife. For the past two years
Mr. Maitland had been compelled to
remain nearly all the time at home,
tenderly cared for by a devoted wife
and attentive family circle. Two
years ago, he was given a wonderful
birthday party as a complete surprise,
but immensely appreciated.
Gradually weakening for three
weeks, with no hope of recovery, he
passed peacefully away last Thursday
morning. The funeral next day was
the largest ever seen in Condobo-
lin, the cortege leaving the Presbyter-
ian Church at 3 p.m. The number
of wreaths was also the largest we
have seen here. About 80 of the Ma-
sonic Brethren were present, and he
was, of course, given a Masonic ritual
interment, following the Church form-
al burial by the Rev. Dorin. A feature
outside the church building and at the
entrance to the cemetery was the
guard of honour formed by 20 of the
local Scout boys, one holding a Union
Jack flag with several black ribbons
placed at the top of it.
We join in extending our sincere
sympathy to the bereaved ones.
