A PIONEER GONE
On October 3, there passed away
very suddenly an old and well res-
pected resident in the person of Mr.
William Ware snr., of Idalia Estate,
Ross River, who was one of
the pioneers of the meat export
trade, says a Townsville paper. He
was born in Victoria, where his fa-
ther carried on an extensive busi-
ness. When quite a young man he
left Melbourne for Queensland initally
settling on Charters Towers. Later
he went to Rockhampton, where
he was contractor at Lakes Creek
for the whole of the slaughtering
and boning for a period of 16 years.
He left Rockhampton for Sydney
where he worked at his trade for
eight years. He then came to
North Queensland, residing at Towns-
ville, filling the position as fore-
man of the freezing department of
the Ross River meat works. His
next move was to Merinda meat
works, at Bowen, where he was the
only foreman at the starting of the
works, with J. P. Brennan as man-
ager. He held this position for five
years. He resigned his position la-
ter and returned to Townsville,
working at Alligator Creek meat
works up to the time of his death.
His sudden death will be felt by all
who knew him. He leaves a wid-
ow, eight sons and four daughters to
mourn their loss. Mrs. Dillon of
Cairns, and Mrs O'Donnell, Idalia
Estate, Ross River, are daughters of
deceased. His son William is fore-
man of Redbank meat works, Bris-
bane; Alfred is foreman at Alligator
Creek; George is in the business
in Brisbane; Thomas is baker at
Alligator Creek; and Sydney, James and John are all butchers at
Alligator Creek. There are three younger
children. Mr. Ware was 65 years of age
and was actively employed until
three days of his death.
