Agnes Maud Ida Sutherland was born at Kiandra on 25 January 1875, the only child of the second marriage of both her parents, Adam Sutherland and Margaret Cleary.

Her early childhood was spent in the Kiandra, Jounama, Pinbeyan area where her father was involved in mining and stock work. Ida, as she was always known, received a reasonably average education and was always a prolific writer of letters and keen reader.

By the time Ida married on 18 December 1890 the family was living at Towong in Victoria.

Ida's husband, Henry George Harris, had arrived in Kiandra in 1860 with his parents Henry and Harriet when he was just 3 years old.

After the birth of her first child, Percy Harry Sutherland Harris, on 7 February 1891 at Towong, Ida returned to the Kiandra area with her husband where they lived in various locations, including "Glory Hole" with his parents, Kiandra and a variety of very basic huts. Ida often said that every hut built by George, as he was known, had at least one tree stump in the floor.

The couple eventually had eight more children, George Adam 14 July 1893, Effie Harriet Margaret 29 June 1894, Bertie Colin 15 September 1895, Henry Robert Adam 7 November 1896, William Oliver George 8 November 1901, twins Jessie Athelia Cleary and John 10 May 1904 and Zillah Edna 6 May 1908. Sadly, of these George, Effie and John died within a few days and Bertie was killed in France on 15 April 1917.

ln 1910 George had a grazing lease at Rules Point and Ida decided to move from the isolated "Glory Hole" where she was living and build a boarding house at Rules Point to cater for travellers between Tumut and the Monaro. The demand for bread by locals and travellers, especially drovers, was high so Ida had a large outdoor oven constructed from rocks out the back and in this she was able to bake ten or twelve loaves of bread at a time.

When the Yarrangobilly Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1916, Ida purchased the licence for one hundred pounds and joined with Zillah Cook, the wife of an ex army major, who had been teaching the Harris children at "Glory Hole", and they built additions to the boarding house to accommodate the hotel. Shortly after, with Henry and Bert at the war, the Harris Family, which included Percy, who had been discharged from the army unfit, Bill, Jessie and Zillah, moved to a share dairy at Bonnie Doon Brungle where they remained until moving to Tumut to live.

ln their retirement both Ida and George enjoyed spending time with their son Bill and his family at Blue Water Hole as it gave them the opportunity to return to the mountains they knew so well.

George died in 1942 but Ida continued to regularly spend time with Bill's family in the mountains and at 67 years of age, was still able to ride on horseback around the area.

ln 1943, together with her daughter-in-law Irene Harris and infant granddaughter Shirley they were virtually marooned by heavy snow for six weeks at Blue Water Hole. Her son Bill had taken cattle to Tumut, it snowed behind him and he was unable to get back to his family. Although the family had plenty of food, with the snow too deep to trap rabbits for dog feed, Irene was forced to venture out on skis with the fire poker to kill wombats to feed the dogs.

Ida's home was a haven, not only for her extended family, but also for mountain people when they visited Turnut, especially if they were sick or "waiting to have their baby". Callers were always welcome and the hospitality was second to none. Many were the mountain drovers who broke their trip with "gran" and always left with their pack bags loaded with cooked meat and her famous ginger nut, german and "fatty" sultana biscuits.

Following the death of her son-in-law, Frank Foord, Ida went with her daughter Zillah to Sydney for a few years but the family eventually moved back to Tumut where she lived a healthy and active home life, continuing to cook for family and friends and do house work. Only a few months before her death, her granddaughter, phyllis Dowling, went over to her house and she had everything out of a bottom cupboard and a rag on her walking stick. When asked what on earth she was up to she replied "I'm just cleaning out this cupboard".

It was just three months before her death that Ida lost her independence and had to be fully cared for by her family. She passed away peacefully at her home in Lambie Street, Tumut on 30 March 1972 at the great age of 97 years and is buried with her husband in the Tumut cemetery.
