| Personal Notes: |
|
Within a few years effects of the depression were being felt everywhere and bad weather conditions along the NSW coast did not help either. Although Gundagai was not really a dairying area, it was proposed that Alf Craig, Heather's father, should bring his cows to Braemar and continue dairying there.
He arrived in October 1930, chose a spot, oversaw building of the dairy, then returned to Jamberoo the following month to arrange for a special train to transport the cows. The Craig family was extremely popular in the district. In glowing terms the Kiama Independent devoted half a column to their farewell, making reference to the charm of Mrs Craig and her daughters who had all taken an active part in the social life of the district. Keith who was a great help to his father, had earned the general liking of those he came in contact with and was an enthusiast in surfing affairs in his spare time. "The loveable qualities of the fair daughters of the house of Craig are so well known as to need no comment." "Alf had been a good sport from boyhood. He went to the war and did his bit, came home to graft on the land and did a 'bit' more for his country, as every man does who follows the plough and herds the cattle". More than 100 were present under the friendly roof of the old Craig homestead which for three generations had extended great hospitality. A clock was presented to the parents and a purse to Enid to purchase a memento from Jerrara friends. Mrs CW Craig, Alf's mother responded and said it was a happy augury that on the departure of the last Craig from the hospitable home it should ring with sounds of happiness and dancing feet and the good wishes expressed as goodbyes. After taking their cows overland to Moss Vale, Alf, Keith and 70 pedigreed Illawarra Shorthorns arrived by train in Gundagai on 10 Jan 1931 while Mrs Craig and the girls followed in February. The Times hoped 'they will be got into harness with town and district ladies in furthering many useful works. They were live wires where they came from and in every movement." (The well-known writers Craig and Adrian McGregor are sons of Jean Craig, Heather's younger sister). |
