| Personal Notes: |
|
Heather Lilian Jane, eldest of the five children of Ethel McGann and Alfred Nicholas CRAIG of Jarrah Park at Jamberoo near Kiama on the NSW south coast. The property had been in the family since 1845 and Heather's father ran a dairy herd of more than a hundred cows.
Born on 20 May 1903, Heather was baptised at the Kiama Methodist Church, attended a local school then Miss Swindell's and finished her education at SCEGGS, Darlinghurst. As the eldest there was plenty for her to do helping at home. Eighteen months after their first meeting, Heather and Jack were married at Christ Church of England, Kiama on 20 Dec 1924. Jack's sister Doris was one of her three bridesmaids. As a wedding present, at Braemar John's father built a handsome house situated on a knoll with a commanding view over the river flats to the tree-lined Murrumbidgee beyond. In photographs taken in the late 20s, Heather was always very smart with her tres chic bobbed hair, waistless dresses, strapped shoes and cloche hats - right up to the minute! Mourned by many, Jack was laid to rest in the Gundagai Cemetery on 17 Mar 1942. Jack's brother Jim leased Braemar from Heather, running it in conjunction with his own property Burrenderry. Needing to support her young family, Heather moved to Sydney and worked as a receptionist for the YWCA; later she trained as a milliner, working for a time at the popular June Millinery in Pitt St. At one stage Heather also had a lending library at North Bondi. With her youngest daughter Helen, she returned to live at Braemar where one of her projects, though not a very lucrative one, was growing flowers for seed for Yates. Heather was active in the Red Cross, the CWA and the RSL Ladies Auxiliary. With her lively personality, she was a very popular lady. Numerous farewell functions were held for her when she finally left Gundagai at the end of November 1956. Heather then lived at various locations, always near her beloved girls - at Cabramatta, Strathfield, Te Awamutu NZ, Port Macquarie, Gunnedah and finally Armidale where she maintained a unit in Marsh Street for some years. Always bright and alert, Heather took a lively interest in everything around her. Sadly the years caught up and eventually she needed full time nursing home care. Aged 91 years and 8 months, Heather died at the Hilton Nursing Home in Armidale on 02 Jan 1995. Her funeral was held at Coffs Harbour Crematorium, Karangi on 04 Jan 1995. At Easter of that year her family gathered at Gundagai Cemetery for her interment at her loving husband's side. |
