| Personal Notes: |
|
Just a few hours after her mother's 29th birthday, Nancye Leah was born at Murrumburrah-Harden on 19 ApI 1922. Like Frank she had her first lessons at Crowther and correspondence at Burrenderry - but when the Bengarralong subsidised school was built Nan was one of its first pupils. Doubling up with her
sister or brother she rode six miles daily on "Clicketty-Click", so named for the sound of her knees, old Mousie, Tommy or some other 'recalcitrant horse'. A year was spent with her Aunt 01 and Uncle Pat O'Brien at Windsor where Nan walked to school - and earned a reputation as Windsor's fastest walker! At the end of her Q.C year, Nan returned to Bengarralong School. The Rev. Morris then arranged a boarding scholarship to St Catherine's at Waverley in Sydney from the beginning of her Intermediate year. Poor Nan had to start several subjects from scratch! She later said she felt like a country bumpkin but was eternally grateful that St Cath's introduced her to concerts and ballet. It was there too that her lifelong love of reading was nurtured. After St Cath's Nan spent a year at home then started a four year nursing course at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where discipline was very strict! For a while she nursed at Casino then became a Sister at Valmar Hospital in Tumut, just across the road from the home of handsome young Commonwealth Bank officer, Frank Mackenzie. |
