Personal Notes:

The youngest De Salis son, John David, born at Gundagai on 23 Oct 1923 came into a different world to his brothers. It was the Jazz Age; surrealism and impressionism in art gained a large following and 'silly songs' like Yes, We Have no Bananas and Barney Google (with the goo goo googly eyes) were popular.
Educated as a boarder at Canberra Boys' Grammar from 1934-40, John played rugby union, tennis, cricket and hockey. Deciding on a rural career, he spent a year working at Weston with his father then enlisted in the RAAF in December 1941.
After aircrew training he flew Tiger Moths at Temora then in 1943 went with the Empire Air Training Scheme to Canada and gained his wings. In the UK he trained on single engine fighter bombers; went to Egypt in March 1944 and joined 239 fighter bomber wing in Italy, flying Mustangs and Kittyhawks.
After war's end John returned to England via Egypt and in late July 1945 sailed for horne on the Orion, the first large repatriation of ex-POWs and invalids. The men were instructed to join the Fleet Air Arm, fighting from aircraft carriers but the atom bomb was dropped before they reached home. John was demobilised at the end of October 1945 and worked at Weston in partnership with his parents until his marriage.
