Personal Notes:
From the Tumut Times of the 4th instant we take the following:
Death has called away another of the oldest and most respected inhabitants of this locality - Mrs. Thomas Quilty, senr.-who expired on Sunday afternoon at her residence, in Capper-street.
It cannot be said that her demise was unexpected, for the deceased, who was a native of county Limerick, Ireland, had attained to the ripe age of 82 years, and latterly her strength and vitality ebbed away so fast that anxious relatives and friends sadly realised that in her case, the change which awaits all was drawing very near.
Few, if any of the elder residents in this neighbourhood who have "gone to join the majority" had their loss regretted by so numerous and respectable of a body of kindred and connections as the departed whose death we record ; and, indeed, to enumerate them would be to catalogue the names of many of the best known families in and around this district. With her husband, Mr. Thomas Quilty, senr., who died died in June 1870, the deceased arrived in Tumut about the year 1842. She has since then seen her family settled in life here, and quite a crowd of grandchildren -many of whom have also made this beautiful and fertile Iocality their abode and of great grandchildren rising around her. She leaves, two surviving sons, Mr. T. Quilty, of Gilmore, and our popular and genial townsman, Mr. M. Quilty; and five daughters - Mesdames Cassidy, O'Neil, McNamara, Downing, and Kenneally. The parting hours of the venerable grandparent of the many descendants of the above named families were sustained and cheered by the presence of sorrowing and loving relations and friends, and who learn, were as calm and as peaceful as her life had been good and true and sincerely pious.
