Obituary - Mrs. Myra B. Harris
31 October 1950 The Tumut and Adelong Times After being a patient in Tumut and District Hospital for the past six weeks, Mrs. Myra Beatrice Harris, wife of Colonel Geoff Harris, of 'Dardanella,' Tumut, passed away at 9.10 p.m. on Sunday. Born in Tumut 68 years ago, the late Mrs. Harris was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs N. Emmanuel, her father being well-known local solicitor. On reaching woman's estate she married Mr. Geoff Harris, then conducting a farming property at 'Wermatong' Tumut. With the exception of a short period of residence at Goulburn where Col. Harris was in command of an Army regiment after the 1st war, the late Mrs. Harris resided in Tumut and district all her life. She took a keen interest in Tumut C.W.A. and Red Cross Society activities, being treasurer of the former organisation for a number of years. In early life she showed considerable talent in painting. Besides the sorrowing husband, one son Frederick, of Lacmalac, is left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. Two brothers, Percy (Brisbane) and Fred Emmanuel (Sydney) and one sister Doris (Mrs. George Cohen, Rose Bay) also survive. One brother Norman and one sister Truda predeceased her. The funeral takes place today, leaving from All Saints' Church of England at 3 o'clock for the Tumut New Cemetery. |

Harris of "Dardanella", Tumut passed away at 9.10p.m. on Sunday" Thus begins the Obituary of Myra, but just how much can we glean of her life from what has been recorded..... Myra's birth was registered .in Paddington in 1882. She was the second child of Nathaniel Emanuel and Maria Marks. Her siblings were Percy Arthur reg. in Tumut 1881, Frederick Clive reg. in Tumut 1886, Norman C reg. in Tumut in 1886, Gertrude D reg. in Sydney in 1888 and Doris E reg. in Sydney in 1890. {reg. = registered} Samuel and Dinah Emanuel, paternal Grandparents to Myra, had their first child Solomon in 1833, Levy 1834, Levy 1835, Moses 1836, Jacob M 1836, Rachel 1837 male 1838, Rose 1840, female 1841 , Phoebe 1843 all registered in Sydney and Nathanial reg 1846 at Bungonia, Goulburn. Jacob Marks and Susannah Levey who married in 1846, were the maternal grandparents of Myra. Their offspring were Selenia reg. Mdlbourne 1847, Leon reg. Melbourne 1848, Deborah reg. Paterson in 1850, Maria reg. Sydney in 1851, John reg. Sydney in 1856, John reg. Sydney in 1865, Septimus A reg. Sydney 1872. ln 1899, at age 18, Geoffrey Hamlyn Lavicount Harris enlisted in the 1st A.L.H Regiment bound for South Africa - he was the baby of the regiment in Tumut. The first evidence to be found of a friendship between Geoff and Myra was in the year 1902, the end of the war in South Africa. Geoff was back in Tumut on leave in time for the wedding of his elder sister Emily Florence to Arthur Stacy. "Myra Emanuel, Geoffs sweetheart, had made Flo's lovely white bouquet". At another family wedding later- that of Geoff's sister Nell to Harry Scott in 1913, "Myra with Flo Harris, played the Wedding March on the piano" Myra married Geoff in 1912. As Myra was Jewish they chose a civil ceremony which took place in the Emanuel home Oielton in Merrivale Street, Tumut. "The Registrar was to marry them at 6 p.m. and the reception was prepared in a marquee. Unfortunately, the Registrar was found dead from heart failure in his office on the morning of the day! The Adelong Registrar could not act in Tumut without permission and it was quite late in the aftemoon when they, at last, knew that the ceremony could be performed! Nevertheless to their wedded life might be applied lhe proverbial saying that "they lived happily ever after' The property Riverview with house and dairy were taken over as Geoffs share of the Wermatong dispersal. A son, Frederick Lavicount, was born. By the time he was one year old, World War 1 had broken out. Lt GHL Harris raised a small Troop of Horse and with his younger brothers Clem, Tom and Vernon, left to serve in the Lighthorse in World War 1. He became Colonel commanding the 7th Australian Light Horse. On his return he renamed the property Dardanella. It was then leased as a dairy for a number of years while Geoff and Myra managed properties at Cooma (lronmungie), Goulburn (Wollogorang) and Nyang Station in far Western NSW. Their son Frederick, joined the A.I.F. in 1940. Shortly after his marriage to Audrey Lester in January 1941, he sailed for Singapore with lhe 2/19 Battalion. After the fall of Singapore, he spent four years in Changi and on the Burma railway as a POW. He was to learn of the birth of his son, Ken (Myra and Geoff's Grandson) while serving in Singapore. We learn from her obituary, that Myra was a member of C.W.A and also Red Cross and it was noted "that she showed considerable talent in painting" As previously mentioned, she played the piano and had a skill with flower arrangement. We have only brief glimpses into Myra's world, punctuated by three wars - (Geoffs involvement in the overseas conflicts of the Boer War and First World War and her sons imprisonment during World War 2). A life full of changes spanning city and country living. We can only speculate as to Myra's character.. A tiny lady in stature but with the capacity to cope with the years of uncertainty and the ability to adapt to the many changes in her life. |
