| - Notes: Hamlyn Laviscount Harris was born on 16 August 1845 at Madras, South India. He was one of eight children of Major General H.L. Harris who spent 35 years in the Madras Army. In England, when Hamlyn Harris was nineteen, he chanced to meet Mrs. Brown, the mother of Edward George Brown who then owned Blowering Station.
Mrs. Brown advised the young man to go to Australia and gave him a letter to her son. His passage paid, Hamlyn Harris was given £20 and, sailing on the Orwell he arrived in Sydney on 25 February 1864 and immediately travelled as far as Gundagai by Cobb & Co. coach, crossing the Tumut River by the punt on the Old Kiandra Road. The first day in Tumut was spent at the home of Mrs. George Shelley at Tumut Plains Station and it was then he met Emily Shelley, the twelve-year-old girl who became his wife eight years later. For the first four years in Australia young Hamlyn Harris worked for E.G Brown on his Blowering and Lacmalac Stations. From there he went to work on station properties at Grenfell and Bombala. Saving some money and with £1,544, his share from his father's estate, he purchased a property at Tomorroma which put him on the road to success. In 1872 Hamlyn Harris married Emily Shelley and became brother-in-law to E.G Brown who had married Emily's sister Amelia. The same year the brothers-in-law purchased Tumut Plains Station from Mrs. George Shelley but she retained the original free grant of 1,280 acres which her husband had acquired from James Hannibal Rose. The station purchased by them totalled 2,166 acres for which they paid Mrs. Shelley £3,200. One of the first jobs given out at Wermatong, a sub-station, was to Peter Moran and Thomas Eggleton to supply split timber for a stockyard at a total cost of £24. Split posts with three mortice holes were £3 a hundred; split posts with two mortice holes were £2 a hundred; 687 split rails and six round poles for capping. The erection cost of 1 shilling and 3 pence a rod. The first sheep were introduced onto the property at Wermatong in 1879. In 1884 they shore 7,175 sheep and for the six succeeding years the shearing varied between six and seven thousand sheep. Before shearing all sheep were washed at the Washpen Lagoon. In 1881 Hamlyn Harris bought Hugh Mcleary's selection near the junction of the Tumut and Goobarragandra Rivers and the same year acquired large leases at Bondo and Shaking Bog on which they depastured sheep in the summer months. Wermatong saw its peak year in 1889 when there were 7,000 sheep and 1,300 head of cattle on the station. Rent from tobacco and maize farms exceeded £1,000 a year but wool was below 1/- a pound. In 1892 and 1893 they were faced with great financial difficulties. The flock of 6,000 sheep had to be reduced to 4,000 but recovering six months later they bought 2,000 Grubben ewes for 3/- a head. In 1893 twelve banking companies closed their doors. (The Bank NSW remained open.) On top of this setback came a very dry season. Sheep were dying in hundreds and 2,000 ewes had to be sent to Garner's boiling down works on the Goobarragandra River. Hamlyn Harris was determined to go out of sheep and rent the river flats to tenant farmers to grow maize and tobacco. Then the tobacco firms declined to buy the tobacco leaf and when blue mould set in the tenant farmers gave up their farms. In 1896 Hamlyn Harris bought E.G. Brown's share and became the sole owner of Wermatong. In 1897 two dairies were established on the property. Hamlyn and his wife had thirteen children - all born at Wermatong. There was never a doctor or trained nurse in attendance at any of the births and this was typical of the women pioneers. There were six sons; > Geoffrey Harris, > Eric Harris, > Noel Harris, > Clem Harris, > Thomas Harris, > Vernon Harris who had a son, Peter Harris. And there were seven daughters; > Florence Harris (married A.N. Stacy), > Vida Harris (married a Mr. Nixon), > Nettie Harris (married a Mr. Walker), > Nell Harris (married a Mr. Scott), > Bertha Harris, > Eva Harris (married a Mr. Meecham), > Edna Harris. In 1899 Hanrlyn Harris's son Geoffrey Harris, before he reached the age of eighteen, enlisted with the Australian Light Horse Regiment and went to the Boer War in South Africa. Dr. Mason presented him with a fine remount which he took with him. On his return to Australia he received a Commission and returned to South Africa. In 1902 Geoffrey Harris purchased land in the New Hebrides and became an agent for Burns Philp & Co. In l9l2 he married Myra Emmanuel, daughter of Nathaniel Emmanuel and settled on a property on Tumut Plains, being part of Wermatong and which was a gift of his father. When World War I broke out in 1914, Geoffrey Harris was the first man in Tumut to enlist. He served with distinction at Gallipoli. On 7 August 1915 his Company (only 200 strong) was reduced to 54 - the rest were either killed or wounded. In 1916 he had been promoted to Captain and was wounded on two separate occasions. He served throughout the Palestine Campaign, was promoted to Major, and awarded the Military Cross. Later, after his retirement, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel. Three of Geoffrey Harris's brothers - Clem Harris, Vernon Harris, and Thomas Harris also served with the Light Horse in Palestine. Clem Harris and Thomas Harris received severe wounds and Vernon Harris contracted fever. After four years active service they returned to resume their normal occupations. During 1910 a considerable number of farms on Tumut Plains and Wermatong were sold to tenant farmers. Some were sold to investors. The highest price obtained was L32 an acre for a block sold to Dr. Browne, a local medical practitioner. In January 1922Hanlyn Harris transferred Wermatong to Noel Harris and Clem Harris and his son-in-law A.N. Stacy as trustees for the members of the family. Hamlyn L. Harris, who was held in esteem and affection by his many friends, died in July 1925 at the age of 80 years and his wife died in 1937 aged 86. Descendants still own a large portion of the Wermatong Station property. |
