- Notes: George Shelley arrived and settled on Bombowlee in 1830. It was then called "Bomboly". He occupied the country on the east side of the river from the Goobarragandra down to Killimicat. His homestead was on the opposite side to the junction of the Gilmore Creek. His Run also extended up the Gilmore Creek to its source.

On 1 September 1835, George Shelley married Amelia M. Waddy at Parramatta and brought his bride to his homestead. They travelled by horseback and by cart. Mrs. McAlister, referred to earlier, had the house in readiness for the new bride. At this time there were only three white women in the Tumut Valley.

George Shelley remained at Bombowlee until 1839 when his brother William took over and George bought Tumut Plains from James Hannibal Rose. George Shelley is believed to have exchanged a property at Appin, owned by him, for Rose's Crown Grant at Tumut Plains.

About this time Mrs. Waddy, the mother of Mrs. Shelley came from Parramarta to live with them. The homestead built by Rose on the Goobarragandra was subject to flooding and Shelley built on the rise where "Camelot" now stands.

Bombowlee Station was officially known as Run No. 153 and contained an area of 27,000 acres. Tumut Plains, known as Run No. 154 contained 20,000 acres".

In the same Gazetle notice Tumut Plains Station was described. At this time Whitty owned Blowering Station which he acquired from Dr. Clayton.

"George Shelley, Tumut Plains, 20,000 acres, bounded on the north by Goobragandra River for 8 miles, on the west by the Tumut River to where the Blowering Mountain comes in to the river, on the south by the Blowering Mountains, which separates my run from Whitty's, on the east by the Bogong Mountains."

In 1839 when the Shelleys lived in Rose's cottage on the Goobarragandra, a gang of bushrangers visited the station and gathered up all the people then living on Tumut Plains, eighty in all, and placed them under guard at the cottage. The bullock drays which had been to Sydney for provisions had iust returned after three months absence. To these stores the bushrangers helped themselves.

By 1848 George Shelley had also acquired Run No. 97 known as "Tintaldra" on the Murray River containing 18,000 acres. Susannah Shelley, the widow of William, held Run No. 98 on the Murray River consisting of 35,000 acres.

George Shelley was the first magistrate in Tumut and certainly the most enterprising of the early settlers. He was the first to move for the appointment of a resident clergyman and also to have a Church of England church erected at Tumut. He, with others, moved to acquire land for the erection of a church on a site where Newtown now is and agreed to pay a third of the cost, but before anything was determined an official of the Crown arrived and chose the site of the present township and the site for the church. (See further particulars in Chapter 10.)

In 1852, whilst travelling on horseback to Melbourne with Dr. Large, George Shelley contracted typhoid fever and soon after his arrival in Melbourne he died, leaving his widow Amelia at Tumut Plains with eight children.

Mr. E.G. Brown who had married Shelley's eldest daughter then became manager of the property. Up until this time it was used principally for grazing cattle, horses, and sheep. It is doubtful if there is any part of the State where horses grow and thrive better than at Tumut Plains.

Ever since George Shelley acquired Tumut Plains until (now in 1967) a direct descendant of the family has owned the original homestead property.

Death Notice
MR. GEORGE SHELLEY.—By the last overland mail from Port Phillip, we learn that Mr. George
Shelley, of the Tumut, died in Melbourne, after a very short illness. The lamented gentleman had not been 48 hours in the town before he was cut off by dysentry.
