- Notes: Edward George Brown was born in Denmark on 2l October 1829, the fifth (There were twelve children in the family.) child of John Brown. [The history of the Brown family goes back through Denmark, Scotland and France. They were very wealthy and had a mansion house in Denmark where they were friends of the King. When a chemical dye was invented to replace Indigo the bottom fell out of their Indigo Plantation investments, so John Brown moved all his family, household treasures and servants to the colony of NSW.] In 1836 Edward came with his parents to Australia and as a youth lived with them on a property at "Colstoun" on the Upper Paterson River.

He received most of his education at the King's School, Parramatta. In 1846, aged seventeen, he came to Tumut and worked for his brother-in-law John Charles Whitty, at Blowering Station. Shortly after his arrival he was managing Lacmalac Station for Whitty. The station contained 12,800 acres. He was a noted horseman and whilst with Whitty on one occasion drove 1,200 head of cattle from Blowering to Marsden's Punt in South Australia. One of his drovers was John Hayden.

In 1854 Edward Brown married Amelia Matilda Shelley, the eldest daughter of George Shelley of Tumut Plains. She was born on 21 September 1836 at Tumut Plains. They had twelve children;

E.G Brown was one of the most colourful of all the early settlers. He was a most energetic townsman and was actively concerned in promoting every worthwhile project for the advancement of the district. He represented the people in Parliament as the Member for Wynyard. On 20 August 1866 E.G Brown was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing Tumut Electorate in the Fifth Parliament. There was great rejoicing in his political camp. The town band marched around the streets playing lively tunes. He was again elected to the Sixth Parliament on 22 December 1869 and for another term from 24 June 1891 for three years in the Fifteenth Parliament.

In 1866 when Whitty left for England, Brown bought Blowering Station. At this time his wife held West Blowering Station of 25,600 acres, on which were running 1,000 head of cattle, the annual rental for which area was £33/8/9.

In 1864 Hamlyn Laviscount Harris, aged nineteen, arrived at Blowering Station to gain colonial experience from E.G Brown. Some little time later he married Emily Shelley, a sister of Mrs. Brown.

After George Shelley's death in 1852 his widow and eldest son Rowland Mansfield Shelley managed Tumut Plains for a time, then E G Brow became manager of the Estate.

About 1812 he sold Blowering Station to Joseph Lambert and then, in partnership with young H.L. Harris, purchased the major portion of Tumut Plains Station. Together these brothers-in-law secured as freehold the greater part of Tumut Plains and the whole of Wermatong. The partnership - Broun and Harris - rented considerable areas of their rich river flats to Chinese tobacco growers at £3 per acre per annum and E.G Brown was the principal buyer of tobacco leaf in the district.

In 1885 E.G Brown moved into the town of Tumut where he resided with his family, but before going to Tumut he engaged in business as a Stock and Station Agent. Town and Country Journal 8 January 1887 records:

"E.G Brown, Stock and Station Agent sold privately 41 1/2 acres at Tumut Plains for £72O and another block of 42 acres close by for £680. Another area of 190 acres Conditional Purchase Land at Blowering was sold for £720."

In 1887 when Tumut was proclaimed a Munucipality he was elected as an alderman, heading the poll. He was Mayor from 1887 to 1891.

At one time or another he presided over most local institutions, including the Tumut Turf Club. the A. and P. Association and the School of Arts. They all prospered under his astute guidance. In 1891 he took Bland Clayton, a son of Dr. Clayton. a pioneer of Blowering into partnership in his Agency business.

On 3 August 1895 E.G Brown suffered a cerebral haemorrhage from which he died the same day at the age of 66 years. As an indication of the public esteem in which he was held over 2.000 people attended his funeral, 300 children from the Convent and Public Schools marched ahead of the hearse. The town band led the funeral procession. The District Court Judge adjourned the District Court for the day.

His wife died on 27 August 1922 at the age of 86 years.
