OBITUARY MR. NORMAN J. AMOS BRISBANE, Sunday.— The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. Norman J. Amos (65), of Alexander-road. Clayfield. Mr. Amos, who was one of Queensland's best known engineers, died following an illness that forced his retirement last May from the position of Railways Chief Engineer, which he held for 16 years. He was born In Cooktown and began his railway career In 1907 and as assistant engineer helped to build the lines between Cloncurry and Hughenden, between Atherton and Herberton, and Pittsworth and Milmerran. He began the Townsville-Ingham line, then went as engineer in charge to build the Burdekin bridge. He served in World War I. and on his return was made district maintenance engineer at Rockhampton. Townsville Daily Bulletin 11 Apr 1916 Mr. Norman J. Amos, District Engineer on the Cairns railway, with Mrs Amos (nee Newell), passed through by the Wyreema on Monday on a honeymoon trip south. On Thursday last, Mr. Amos was presented with a silver tea and coffee service by Mr. Prewett, Traffic Manager, on behalf of the employees of the railway at Cairns as a small mark of the esteem in which he is held. The Telegraph Brisbane 18 Apr 1916 A pretty wedding was quietly celebrated at Elderslie, Herberton, the home of the bride's parents, by the Rev. J. A. Sinclair (Presbyterian minister) on Friday evening last (says the " Wild River Times " of 11th April), the contracting parties being Miss Janet Isabel Newell, elder daughter of Blr. and Mrs. John Newell, and Mr. Norman J . Amos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos, Clayfield, Brisbane. The ceremony wus held in the drawing room, which was most lasiciully decorated with beautiful flowers sent from all ports ot the district by the many friends and well-wishers of the young couple. Bowls of lovely white flowers were on the table before the wedding party, and a handsome wedding bell hung above. Blah… |
