The Tumut and Adelong Times 9 Sep 1920
Death of Mrs R Downing Quite a gloom was cast over our town on Wednesday morning last, when it became known that the distinguished and respected old resident, Mrs E. Downing, proprietress of the Star Hotel, had passed away to her last resting place, at the advanced age of 73 years, the cause of death being kidney and heart trouble. The funeral took place next day. Full obituary will be given in next issue.

MRS. REBECCA DOWNING.
By the demise of Mrs. Rebecca Downing, relict of the late Robert Downing, which took place at her residence, the Star Hotel, Tumut, on Wednesday morning last at 6.30, the town loses an old identity and one who was held in the very highest esteem and respected by all who knew her. Her age was 74 years. It was a noble life, well spent. There are left to mourn their irreparable loss, seven daughters (Mrs. Jas. McNamara, of Tumut, Mrs. Thomas Sullivan, of Gilmore, Mrs. Thos Naughton, Mrs. J. H. Beale of Tumut, Mrs. Pye, Coolamon, Mrs. Robt. Barbor, of Brighton-le-Sands and Miss Mona), and four sons Robert, Fred, Thomas and John (Picton), for whom the deepest sympathy is felt in their bereavement.
