Major Salis served with the Cape Mounted Riflemen throughout the Kaffir war oí 1840-47; against the insurgent Boers at Boem Plaats in 1848 where he was dangerrously wounded, and had his horser killed under him; also in the Kaffir war of 1850-53 (Medal); and whan in command of a detachment at Graham's Town he quelled a serious mutiny of the Native soldiers; served in the Crimea from Feb 1855 (Medal and Clasp for Sebastopol). Daring a period of 13 years service abroad he was in nineteen actions and skirmishes and was frequently mentioned in public orders for gallant and skilful conduct. [Hart's Army List]. The Times 6 Apr 2004 "A military medal awarded to a horse for its gallantry in the Charge of the Light Brigade is to be auctioned in London. Drummer Boy, ridden by Lieutenant-General Rudolph de Salis, was awarded the medal after the Battle of Balaclava in 1854." The Peerage entry Lt.-Gen. Rodolph John Hibernius Leslie Fane de Salis was born on 9 May 1811.1 He was the son of Jerome Fane de Salis, 4th Comte de Salis and Henrietta Foster. He married Augusta Letitia (?) on 8 November 1875. He died on 13 March 1880 at age 68. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 8th Hussars. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.). |
