The son of John and Ann nee Walls Freebody of Edmonton, Middlesex, England.
Simon Clarkson Freebody was a convict who was sentenced at the Old Bailey Sessions, in London, on 11 Jul 1787, to 7 years transportation for theft of a lamb carcass, from Richard Elland's slaughterhouse at Enfield in England. He had carried the carcass to London and sold it to a butcher's wife at Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, telling her that he was a drover. It was identified by the owner by two wooden Sets which had been taken with it. After 9 months in Newgate Prison, Simon Freebody was sent to the hulk, "Stanislaus" on 25 Apr 1788. His age was given as 20. On 16 Nov 1789, he was embarked on the ship "Surprise", a convict transport that was part of the Second Fleet, and arrived at Port Jackson, Sydney on 26 June 1790. The other 2 ships which formed the Second Fleet were the "Neptune" and the "Scarborough". Almost 1/3 of the convicts who were transported on the Second Fleet ships died during the voyage. On 3 Nov 1794, after his sentence had expired, Simon, along with 10 others, was granted 20 acres of land at Mulgrave Place on the Hawkesbury River, just north of the present site of Windsor. Simon married Mary Ann nee Wells in 1795. They had 8 (eight), children, John, Ann, Simon J., Mary Ann, Sarah, Margaret, William, and Ham. |
