Aged 94 Years
Daughter of William and Elizabeth Married William in 1848 in Hythe, Kent with 10 children born of this union. Arrived in the colony with her husband in 1848 on the ship ' Waverly' The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tue 12 Apr 1921 MRS. SUSANNAH BACK. Death removed from our midst on Tuesday the oldest nonogenarian of the Tumut district, Mrs. Susannah Back, relict of the late Wm. Back sr, of Gocup, she having reached within three weeks of her 95th birthday, which occurred after an illness extending over a period of seven weeks, although it was not until the previous Saturday that grave symptoms manifested themselves, when she collapsed and never rallied. Deceased was born at Hithe [Hythe], Kent, England, and with her husband, who was born in the same house from which they were married, came to New South Wales 70 years ago, 40 of which deceased spent at Gocup. Death separated the husband from the wife 24 years since. There were ten children in the family, the eldest now being 72 years, and nine survive their parents. They are Messrs James, William and John, Mesdames John McCormick, Geo. King (Victoria), Hillier, T. Baker (Sydney), R. Ryan (Grahamstown), and Miss Carrie, the latter attending her aged mother in her illness and being her constant companion during her declining years. Sixty grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren constitute her line of descendants. Deceased was a true helpmeet and a most devoted mother, and besides was noted through out the district for her practical sympathy and help in sickness and distress amongst her neighbors. In the Old Cemetery, on Wednesday last the remains of the lamented departed were laid to rest alongside those of her husband, the last sad rites at the graveside being recited by Rev. A. G. Rix, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Jas. Elphick. |

| - Notes: William Back and his wife (Susannah Stockwell) were among the very early settlers in the district - first at Billapalap, then at Gocup by 1855. Their children were:

Mrs Back died at Gocup in April l92l at the age of 95 years, leaving over 100 descendants in the district. |
