| Personal Notes: |
|
Before the big flood of 1852 Tom's father, known locally as "Long Tom" Greensmith Lindley, ran the Rose Inn at Gundagai. He was away from town when his wife, four small children and 21 people huddling on the roof of the inn were swept away by the floodwaters and drowned. Long Tom then wed Elizabeth Elliott and had sons Thomas 1855 and Robert 1857. Two girls Mary 1854 and Caroline 1860, died in infancy. Tom Senior died in 1862 and Elizabeth subsequently married
George Fox who took his bride and her two small sons to live in Queensland. The Gundagai Times of 14 May 1870 reported that 14-year-old Tom Lindley found a quantity of wet cartridges which were discarded by members of the Goulbum Volunteer Rifles following a competition. Tom stuffed the cartridges into his pockets and later tried to light one. Those in his pocket ignited, horribly burning his legs and lower body. Four children were born during their stay in Queensland - Florence May 1880 married Allan FULLER and lived in New Guinea. Thomas George 1882, died 1949, became father of Thomas John and grandfather to Thomas George(Sonny), Roy and Geoffrey. John Robert King 1884 went back up to Queensland. In 1916 he enlisted in the army, going back to Gundagai to say goodbye. He was gassed at the front in 1917, spent some time in Britain and came home on the Indara, bringing with him the very first war bride to visit Gundagai. They returned to and remained in Queensland. Back to Queensland, Tom had not been well and when little Arthur was about three, the family returned to Gundagai where they settled at Rosevale, Jackalas and Tom began mining. Payable gold was found in May 1890 so a second shaft was sunk in July that year. Tom and Mary's last child Mary Elizabeth born 1889 was married twice - to Jack HALL then Randall CLARK of Eastwood. Tom was only 36 when he died on 15 July 1891 leaving Mary to raise four children aged from two to 11. |
