| Personal Notes: |
|
Thomas Mulvihill was born in Kerry, Ireland in 1830. He came with his wife to Singleton in 1856 and worked there for McDougall Brothers.
The family arrived in Tumut in 1861 and selected a farm on the river near Mill Angle. It remained in the family for 100 years and was worked for a lifetime by "Tucker" Mulvihill, a son of Thomas Mulvihill. The family lived for a great many years on the rise near the intersection of Fitzroy and Sydney Streets. Eleven children were reared there. It is claimed that the first P. & A. Show was held on the land at the rear of Mulvihill's 01d homestead. Thomas Mulvihill died on 28 June 1915. |

Son of Michael and Ellen nee Connell Married Johanna Scanlon in 1855 Ireland with 11 children born of this union. Married Martha J Korn in 1894 no issue. Arrived in the colony in 1857 with Johanna on the "Mary Ann" The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Mon 5 Jul 1915 DEATH OF MR- THOMAS MULVIHILL. WORTHY PIONEER OF 60 YEARS STANDING It becomes our painful duty to chronicle the passing of another of Australia's pioneers, who have proved the backbone of her greatness, in the person of Mr.Thomas Mulvihill, whose death occurred on 28th alt, at 8.15 a.m., at the ripe old age of 85 years, the cause of death being senile decay with heart failure supervening. His death was quite, unexpected, as he milked his cows as usual on the morn of June 27, but complained of feeling unwell at 11 p.m. of same date. Dr. Browne held out little hope, the heart being very feeble. Born in Newtown, Sands, County Kerry, Ireland, on 13th May, 1830, he married when 25 years of age, and came to this country with his good helpmeat, went to Noetsfield, Singleton, and entered the employ of Messrs McDougall Bros, remaining with them for five years, and in 1831 he traversed the then almost roadless wilderness overland to Tumut and for about 12 months resided on the property now occupied by Mr P Eurell, in Fitzroy-st. He then bought the holding on which he died, and on which (prior to his occupation) the first Agricultural Show was ever held in Tumut. For 39 years he carried on with marked success the business of dairyman and milk-vendor, and farmed his fine property at the back of the racecourse in the vicinity of the old flour mill. In 1892, his worthy wife and sharer of his joys and sorrows died, and our departed one abandoned the strenuous work of his early days, during which, through careful saving and shrewd business capabilities, he amassed a competence. He had a family of eight daughters and three sons; four of the first and one of the latter predeceased him. Those now living are four daughters, viz ; Mrs Lees (North Sydney), Mrs Q Danvers (Tempe), Miss Mulvihill (Gulgong), and Mrs J Connors (Tumut); and two sons, viz : M.Mulvihill (West Australia) and T. C. Mulvihill (Tumut). In 1894, the subject of our obituary married again. These are left to mourn the Ioss of a worthy, loving and considerate father and a dutiful husband. He passed quietly and peacefully away, fortified by the rites of his holy church The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Wednesday last, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the old cemetery. Mr J as Elphick capably carried out the duties of undertaker; the coffin, which was of cedar, was richly appointed. Rev Father Hennessy officiated at the grave. The bereaved ones were the recipients of numerous telegrams, letters of condolence and wreaths. The pallbearers were Messrs John Cooke, P Naughton T J Connors, M Mulvihill, E Purcell and J. W .McCutcheon. We tender the bereaved our deepest sympathy. |
