- Notes: URANIE JEFFERY nee Fisaro by Val Wilkinson Uranie Figaro was born about 1814/1816 on the lsle of France (now called Mauritius). Although no record of her birth has been found, her mother's name is thought to be Adele, but her father's name has not been recorded. Uranie's ancestry is not clear, but her appearance suggests a mixture of negro and European blood. Uranie arrived in Sydney aboard the 'Guide' on 8 April 1829, which had come from England via Mauritius with a cargo and three passengers. Described on the ship's indent as "Black Urania, a servant to Miss Blanchard", Uranie accompanied Miss Emeline Blanchard and Mr. Frederick Manton who were married on arrival in Sydney Cove. As a servant, Uranie went with the Mantons to their property 'Mon Reduit' on the Yass River. It was here she met her future husband, John Jeffery, who was working as a shepherd for Frederick Manton. Uranie and John were married by Banns on the 27 June 1831 at the Sutton Forest Chapel, Old Bong Bong with the consent of Frederick Manton, her master. Uranie and John Jeffery's first child was born in September of 1831 and named Richard Manton Jeffery, no doubt in honour of her "master". Four more children were born to the couple at Yass - John (b. 1834), James (b. 1837), and daughters, Harriett (b.1839) and Juliet (b.1842). lt is presumed Uranie and John continued their employment with the Manton's, as their abode stated at the baptism of these children is 'Mon Reduit'. Sadly their third son, James, died as an infant, although there is no record of when this took place. At this time Uranie's life changed again. It is thought that with the move from Yass of the Manton family, John and Uranie decided to strike out on their own. The journey from Yass to 'Oberne', a station some 12 miles from Tarcutta on the Tarcutta Creek, would have been rugged and tedious, especially with five small children. At 'Oberne', John followed his occupation of a shoemaker, a very important role in a remote settlement many miles from any towns. ln 1846, their next child was born at Oberne, another daughter, Esther. ln 1850, further joy for Uranie when she gave birth to another son, whom they called James after the son who had died; and Robert, born in 1852, also at Oberne Station. There was another move for Uranie when John was successful in securing a farm on the Gilmore Creek near the town of Tumut. ln August 1856 at Gilmore, Uranie gave birth to her ninth child, a son, whom they called Frederick after her former master, Frederick Manton. Uranie's greatest loss would have been on 4 July 1862 with the sudden death of her husband, John, of a heart attack whilst ploughing a paddock. This left her with two small children, but the rest of the family grown enough to assist with the farm. Sadly she experienced further distress with the death of her second son, John, in 1863 and her daughter, Juliet, in 1880. At the age of about 66, Uranie once again turned her skills to child-rearing when she took on Juliet's 6 year old daughter, Janet Dougall, following her death. As her sons and daughters married and began families of their own, Uranie was there to assist with the births, and became well known as a capable and kindly midwife. Her skills were much sought after as she brought so many babies into the world. The only known portrait of Uranie shows a petite woman, with a plait of lustrous black hair wound around her head, her tiny waist accentuated by the fullness of her frilled gown. Her swarthy complexion is highlighted by her slightly flattened nose and full lips - a reflection of her Negro-French ancestry. Only her hand, positioned carefully on her lap, shows signs of her life of toil and care - the fingers slightly bent and the knuckles enlarged perhaps with the early stages of arthritis. The beautiful lace collar is caught at the throat with a large brooch of intricate design. She sits serenely, eyes slightly lowered from the viewer, the picture of a successful wife and mother in the middle years of her life. lt is thought the photograph could have been taken after the death of her husband in 1862, when she was aged about 48. Uranie Jeffery died on 27 January 1890 of "senile decay" and is buried in the old Tumut Cemetery. The Tumut Times ran an obituary which the Gundagai Times reprinted on 4 February 1890: "We have to record the death of Mrs. Uraney (sic) Jeffery, a very old resident, she having resided here for over 40 years. Her late husband was the first shoemaker who settled in Tumut. The deceased, who was generally well respected, was aged 74 years, and she died from the effects of old age." Of her nine children, eight survived to adulthood, and seven married. There were forty-one grandchildren, although not all survived childhood. From humble beginnings when she arrived as a child-servant to Miss Blanchard, to the progenitor of hundreds of descendants now living in all parts of Australia, Uranie can proudly take her place as a true pioneer.
