- Notes: William Daniel Patrick O'Brien. Although not regarded as an early settler, O'Brien was such a commanding influence and figure in the district that any history of the Valley would be amiss without some detail of his life and work.

Born at Killaloo, Ireland in 1847 W.D.P. O'Brien came with his parents to Australia and landed in Melbourne in 1854. There he attended Scots College but when he was twelve, he and a boy named Wells cleared away from home and walked to the Bendigo goldfields.

His father, a solicitor, had his son brought back with the idea of training him to be a solicitor. Young O'Brien soon made another bolt and got a job working on a mine for David Mitchell, the father of Dame Nellie Melba. Leaving this job he went to a number of places and to the Ovens diggings in 1862. Then to Grenfell, Forbes and Parkes where he gained considerable experience in the construction and erection of poppet heads over shafts. This experience and the reputation he gained secured him a job to erect overhead machinery at Greymouth Coal Mines in New Zealand.

W.D.P. O'Brien then came to Adelong, but the time of his arrival there is indefinite. Having formed the idea that the Gibraltar Mine was a bonanza, but not having the money to develop it, he left his wife in Adelong and went to Charters Towers where he had considerable financial success.

Getting a telegram from his wife he hurried back to Adelong and took out a mining lease covering the Gibraltar Reef. He let a contract to sink a shaft at £5 a foot.

Back to Charters Towers in 1890, the year of the Great Maritime Strike, and being a staunch labour man, W.D.P. O'Brien organised the miners there in their strike, and gave substantial assistance to them.

Returning again to Adelong he organised capital to develop Gibraltar Mine. Eventually it was sold to an English company for £300,000 of which W.D.P. O'Brien received a considerable portion. W.D.P. O'Brien now turned his attention to farming and dairying and purchased the excellent Rosebank Estate on the Gilmore Creek.

With Sam Gordon and Dr. Mason he played an important role in the establishment of the dairying industry in the district, In 1900 he built up a dairy herd of 300 cows, principally Ayrshires and on 16 May opened his Rosebank Butter Factory. About this time he added to the factory freezing works.

In that year he called tenders for the erection of the fine O'Brien's Hall in Wynyard Street. Twelve tenders were received and that of John Treek of Sydney at £3,075 was accepted. One can imagine how little of the work at that price would be done now.

He was a keen committeeman of the P. & A. Society and was mayor of the Municipal Council in 1909. On 18 November 1917, in memory of his two sons killed in World War I, he donated the Nuns' Chapel at the Catholic Church - an imposing addition of blue granite. W.D.P. O'Brien, always a driving force for the progress of the district, died on 2 August 1925 aged 76 years.
