by Lyn Quince Caroline O'Brien was born in 1852 in Cornwall, England. She was the daughter of Richard Wellington and Caroline Jane Matthews. On Caroline's death certificate her father's occupation is given as 'mining speculator'. Caroline immigrated to Victoria with her family, where her father became a tin miner at El Dorado. On 9 April 1871, at Chiltern, Caroline married George Hynes, an lrish immigrant gold miner. Tragedy struck Caroline on 14 November 1872 when George passed away in Melbourne leaving her to care for 2 young children - Phillipa age 2 and Terence an infant. Twelve months later in Beechworth, Caroline met and married William Daniel Patrick O'Brien. Caroline now had in her life another man with mining in his blood. ln 1874 Caroline and William's eldest son, Richard, was born. Once more tragedy struck with the death of Terence in 1875. A daughter, Caroline Jane and a son, Orlando Lockyer, were born in El Dorado. Through this decade Caroline's husband was constantly leaving to seek the elusive pot of gold, while Caroline stayed in El Dorado with her young family in the harsh conditions of a gold mining town. ln 1880 Caroline and William moved with their children to Shepardstown, near Adelong. Five more children were born to the marriage - Agnes, William, Louisa, Thompson and John Assal. The Charters Towers gold strike occurred at this time and William could not resist the call. Before he left he gave Caroline instructions to send for him immediately if the Gibraltar mine at Adelong was placed on the market. He had good fortune at Charters Towers and back in Adelong Caroline was caring for the family and keeping an eye on William's Gibraltar dream. When it was put up for sale she telegraphed him and he returned for a short while to conclude his purchase. lt was not long before he felt the pull of the goldrush in Queensland and he was off again. Eventually he returned and started to mine the Gibraltar. Finally, he sold the mine and moved Caroline and the children to Rosebank at Gilmore. William was now permanently at home and Caroline had some stability in her family life. Unfortunately, she did not live long to enjoy this as she passed away in May, 1899 at the age of 47 and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, Tumut. Such a short life for a lady who had overcome many difficulties to raise her children and support her husband in his endeavours. |
