- Notes: William Stephen Watson was born in Scotland and came to Tumut in L844 where he later married Maria [sic] Hastings, a daughter of James [sic] Hastings. They had three sons and three daughters.

At one period he conducted his own general storekeeping business in Russell Street opposite the old Globe Hotel.

Sometime in the 1860s the family moved to take over the Diggers Arms Hotel at Adjungbilly, then for a short time he managed the Australian Arms Hotel at Gocup before building the Half-Way House Hotel on the Marked-Tree Line Road between Gundasai and Tumut. He died in 1902.

We regret to have to record that Mr. Watson, for many years a resident of Gocup, succumbed to an attack of Bright's disease on Tuesday last, and was buried on Wednesday. Mr. W. H. Hoad carried out the undertaking business. We sympathise deeply with the bereaved ones.
